Campus life

Life at an IIM

Life at an IIM is two compressed years of case discussions, club work and placement prep, lived almost entirely on a residential campus. The pace is relentless, and the friendships formed under it tend to last.

How the IIM system works

There are 22 Indian Institutes of Management. Twenty-one are running, and Parliament approved IIM Guwahati as the 22nd in August 2025. Each is its own legal entity under the IIM Act, 2017, which also let IIMs award an MBA degree instead of the old PGDM diploma.

The shared gate is the Common Admission Test. About 2.58 lakh candidates appeared for CAT 2025, competing for a few thousand seats. A CAT percentile gets you a shortlist; the written ability test and personal interview that follow decide the offer.

The system grew in generations. Calcutta and Ahmedabad opened in 1961, Bangalore in 1973, Lucknow in 1984, and Kozhikode and Indore in 1996. A long expansion from 2007 added campuses from Shillong to Sirmaur, and NITIE Mumbai became IIM Mumbai in 2023.

Culture: the case method and the dorm

Class runs on cases. You read a business problem the night before, and a professor can cold-call anyone to open the discussion. Class participation counts toward your grade, and relative grading means your batchmates are also your benchmark. It sounds cutthroat; in practice, most people survive it by preparing in study groups.

Dorm life is the other half. Freshers at IIM Ahmedabad are called fachchas, birthdays mean being hoisted for bumps, and inter-dorm water fights break out in the middle of exam weeks. Every campus has its own lingo, its own inherited archive of old notes, and its own version of the formal dinner before placement season.

Fests, clubs and PlaceCom

Each IIM runs a flagship weekend that mixes culture and business. IIM Ahmedabad has Chaos for culture and Confluence for business, IIM Bangalore has Unmaad and the all-night classical concert Yamini, IIM Calcutta runs 7 Lakes Fest, and IIM Lucknow runs Manfest-Varchasva.

The club map repeats across campuses: consulting, finance, marketing, product, analytics, operations, entrepreneurship and a few cultural and sports clubs. The most powerful student body is usually the Placement Committee, which runs recruitment logistics and carries real influence. Committee and club roles are competitive, with their own applications and interviews.

How IIM students actually make friends

Your section and your study group are where it starts. You spend every class with your section in the first year, and the four or five people you prep cases with become your closest circle by the end of term one.

The second layer is the club or committee you land. Club work means late nights on case competitions and events, which is where cross-section friendships form. Exchange terms and summer internships widen the circle again in the second year.

Because the program is short, the window is narrow. Students who say they built the best network usually committed to one or two things in the first month instead of applying to everything.

Careers in broad strokes

Placement season is the organizing event of the two years. Summer internships are decided in the first year, often converting into pre-placement offers. Final placements then run in a tightly managed process. Consulting, banking and finance, FMCG, tech and product roles take the largest shares, with newer recruiters from climate, deep tech and global capability centers growing.

Outcomes vary a lot by campus and by specialization, so read each institute's audited placement report rather than headline highs. The alumni network, across business, policy and startups, is the longer-term payoff.

Living on an IIM campus

Almost every IIM is fully residential, and many of the newer ones sit at the edge of their cities or in temporary campuses while permanent ones are built. That makes the campus your whole world for two years: classes, mess, sports grounds, the dorm terrace and the late-night tea stall.

Batches are diverse in a way undergrad campuses often are not. You will sit next to engineers, commerce graduates, doctors, designers and people with three or four years of work experience. Some of the best friendships cross those lines, because study groups are often deliberately mixed.

The pressure is front-loaded. The first two terms combine core courses, summer placement prep and club inductions, so sleep is the first casualty. Seniors usually advise picking one club you care about and one sport or cultural outlet you keep for yourself.

Exchange terms and summers

Most of the older IIMs send a share of their second-year batch abroad for an exchange term with partner business schools, and IIM Bangalore is known for an especially large exchange program. Summer internships, usually eight to ten weeks between the two years, scatter the batch across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram and beyond, which is when you meet interns from other campuses.

MBA life leaves little time to search for people outside your section. Zyber is a social app for meeting verified people nearby, so you can find a case partner, a running buddy or someone heading to the same city for a summer internship, and message them directly.
