Meeting people at IIM Bodh Gaya

Last updated: October 2026

IIM Bodh Gaya is Bihar's only IIM, a 2015 institute that began in a couple of borrowed classrooms and now has a Torana-inspired permanent campus close to the Mahabodhi Temple, where the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Area:Uruvela, Bodh Gaya, Gaya district, Bihar
Founded:2015
Size:mid-sized (1,100+ students across five residential programmes)
Affiliation:Institute of National Importance (IIM Act 2017)
Campus:About 119 acres, Uruvela, Bodh Gaya
Known as:IIM BG

IIM Bodh Gaya started in 2015 with 30 students in a couple of Magadh University classrooms with no library, and now runs a Torana-inspired permanent campus a short ride from the Mahabodhi Temple.

The story of IIM Bodh Gaya

IIM Bodh Gaya was established in 2015 as the 16th IIM, mentored by IIM Calcutta. The first batch of 30 students started in a couple of classrooms at Magadh University, with no library, no lab and visiting faculty from IIM Calcutta, a period Business Standard captured in a 2016 headline about an IIM with just a couple of classrooms.

The institute later operated from Magadh University's Prabandh Vihar while its own campus took shape. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the permanent campus virtually on 20 February 2024. Designed by CP Kukreja Architects around the Torana, the ceremonial Indian gateway, it includes the Niranjana auditorium, the Pragyata library, the Uruvela academic building, the Udaan sports complex and the Dhanvantari medical block.

Under Director Dr Vinita S. Sahay, only the second woman to lead an IIM, the institute added a five-year IPM, an MBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management and an MBA in Digital Business Management. NIRF ranked it 31st among management schools in 2025.

What the campus is like socially

Location defines IIM Bodh Gaya. The campus sits in a town of monasteries and pilgrims, and orientation includes a heritage walk to the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, run with INTACH. Few B-schools can say their study break is a short trip from the Bodhi Tree.

The campus now hosts over 1,100 students from more than 26 states across five residential programmes, so IPM undergrads, MBA students and healthcare management students share the same hostels and clubs. Students from the early batches still tell the borrowed-classroom story at every gathering.

Traditions every IIM Bodh Gaya student knows

  • Elegante: The annual cultural fest, the biggest student-run celebration on campus.
  • Aarohan: A three-day inter-IIM sports event. The 2024 edition ran 13 to 15 December.
  • YES (Youth Entrepreneurship Summit): The flagship entrepreneurship event. The 2026 edition drew about 1,000 participants from over 250 institutions.
  • Netritva: The annual leadership summit with industry leaders and academics.
  • Heritage Walk: An orientation walk to the Mahabodhi Temple, run with INTACH.
  • Gyanodaya: The annual HR conclave on changing workplace trends.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Two classrooms, no library: The founding batches' shared origin story, now retold to every new cohort.
  • Building names: Campus buildings carry local and classical names like Uruvela, Niranjana and Pragyata, after the area's Buddhist history and the Niranjana river.
  • The open-book library: The Pragyata library was designed to look like an unfolding pop-up book.
  • The Super Tree: A sculptural structure on campus that also handles water filtration, energy generation and climate control.

How to find your people here

At IIM Bodh Gaya, a club or committee is the fastest way to build a real social circle, since the two-year program moves fast and most lasting friendships come out of a shared case comp or event team.

Careers, internships and placements

IIM Bodh Gaya's placements span consulting, BFSI, sales and marketing, analytics and operations, and the specialised MBAs open extra doors: healthcare management students target hospital and healthcare chains, and the digital business track targets analytics and tech roles.

Because Bodh Gaya is far from the big corporate hubs, students lean on summits like YES and Netritva, alumni webinars and club competitions to build industry networks.

Rivalries and eternal debates

IIM Bodh Gaya is compared constantly with its 2015 batchmates, Amritsar, Nagpur, Sambalpur and Sirmaur, on rankings and placements. Its NIRF climb gives students plenty to say in those debates.

Students are settling into the new campus, the IPM and specialised MBAs are growing, and the YES summit keeps getting bigger.
