IIM Kashipur is a 2011 IIM on a 200-acre campus in the Uttarakhand foothills, about 30 km from Jim Corbett National Park, known for single-occupancy hostel rooms, a demanding course load and the Agnitraya fest.

The story of IIM Kashipur

IIM Kashipur was one of the IIMs created under the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, and its foundation stone was laid on 29 April 2011. Prof. Gautam Sinha became its first director, explaining his decision to lead a brand-new institute in a remote town with a line students still quote: the poorest Rothschild is still a Rothschild, and the newest IIM in the remotest of places is still an IIM.

Sinha's founding plan was ambitious: grow faculty to 40 within five years, keep a tight faculty-student ratio, attract more women students and break into India's top management schools. The institute later settled into its 200-acre campus, built with features like radiant cooling.

Today IIM Kashipur runs a two-year MBA (PGPM), an executive PGPM, a residential fellowship programme and an executive fellowship programme. NIRF ranked it 19th among management schools in 2023, and Neeraj Dwivedi is the current director.

What the campus is like socially

Students describe a campus that never sleeps: classes in the morning, quizzes in the afternoon, sports and club events in the evening, and study late into the night. The course structure is considered one of the toughest among the newer IIMs, and the small, remote setting means your batch becomes your whole social world.

Everyone gets a single-occupancy room, which is rare for an Indian B-school and gives people space to recharge. When the campus gets too intense, the Himalayan foothills and Corbett are close by, and the institute has even turned forest visits into management lessons.
