The story of IIM Lucknow
IIM Lucknow was established in 1984, the fourth IIM after Calcutta, Ahmedabad and Bangalore. Ishwar Dayal was its founding director. The main campus sits at Prabandh Nagar on the northern outskirts of Lucknow, and the institute frames its mission around the city's tehzeeb, or culture.
In 2005 IIM Lucknow became the first IIM to set up a satellite campus exclusively for executive education, a 20-acre campus in Sector 62, Noida. It also runs a PGP in Agribusiness Management, now in its third decade, along with programmes in sustainable management, an executive programme (IPMX) and a doctoral programme.
What the campus is like socially
The nickname HelL comes from the academic rigour, and students wear it with pride. Life has its own vocabulary: Globe is fancy business talk that means nothing, DCP is Desperate Class Participation, a Free-Rider coasts on the group project, and Lite-lo means relax or drop the plan. Everyone knows the map by its nicknames too: classes are in BG-1 and BG-2, group work happens at the CC (Computer Centre), and parties happen at Titanic.
The festival calendar is dense. Independence Day and Republic Day bring flag hoisting and plays on social issues, and there is Ganesh Chaturthi, Dandiya Night, Diwali, Lohri bonfires, Holi, a Prom Night with a salsa workshop, and Euro Night to say goodbye to European exchange students. Campus parties come round almost every month.
