How to Choose Societies in College
Societies are where most college friendships and skills actually come from. Choosing the right two or three matters more than joining the most impressive-sounding ones.
Choose societies by the people and the work, not the prestige. Attend the open sessions of four or five that interest you, notice where you actually enjoyed the room and the task, then commit to two or three and show up consistently. One society you are genuinely part of beats five you joined for your resume and never returned to.
Step by step
1. Trial more than you plan to keep
In the first couple of weeks, attend the open sessions or auditions of four or five societies that catch your interest. You cannot tell from a poster whether you will like the people or the actual work, so treat the early sessions as trials rather than commitments.
2. Judge the room, not the reputation
The most famous society on campus is not automatically the right one for you. Pay attention to where you felt comfortable talking, where the seniors were welcoming rather than gatekeeping, and where the work itself was something you would do on a free evening. That is the society you will keep showing up to.
3. Match societies to what you want out of the year
If you want friends, pick where the people clicked. If you want a skill, pick where the work is real and hands-on. If you want to build something for later, pick where seniors actually hand juniors responsibility. Being honest about your goal makes the choice much clearer.
4. Commit to two or three and go deep
Once you have trialled, narrow down to two or three and attend consistently for at least a month before judging. Depth beats breadth: being a real, known member of a couple of societies gives you both the friendships and the responsibility that a long list of nominal memberships never will.
5. Do not fear switching
If a society turns out to be the wrong fit after a fair try, leaving is completely normal and better than half-attending out of guilt. First year is the right time to correct the choice while everyone is still settling in.
