Meeting people at Lady Shri Ram College

Last updated: October 2026

LSR is a women's college on a 15-acre red-brick campus in Lajpat Nagar, South Delhi, where every student signs up for NSS, NCC or NSO and the societies are as competitive as the courses. Tarang in March is the week the whole college comes together.

Area:Lajpat Nagar, South Delhi
Founded:1956
Size:mid-size
Affiliation:University of Delhi (women's college)
Campus:15 acres, Lajpat Nagar-IV, South Delhi
Known as:LSR

LSR requires every undergraduate to enrol in NSS, NSO, or NCC as part of college life, and its student-run college magazine, started in 1956, has carried student writing in more than a dozen languages.

The story of Lady Shri Ram College

Lady Shri Ram College was founded in 1956 by industrialist Sir Shri Ram as a memorial to his wife. His stated vision was simple: more education, more education for women, and more education for more women. The college started in Daryaganj with 299 students before moving to its own campus in Lajpat Nagar.

LSR grew quickly into one of Delhi's best known women's colleges. In 2005 it launched a UGC-funded diploma in Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding, and at its golden jubilee in 2006 it named its peace centre after its most famous alumna, Aung San Suu Kyi. The Dalai Lama inaugurated the centre's building in 2013, and it began working from its new premises in August 2014.

Today the college offers honours degrees across the humanities, social sciences, commerce, mathematics and statistics, plus elementary education and journalism. It holds an A++ grade from NAAC and is known for having won the DU Green Cup for the cleanest, greenest campus 29 years in a row.

What the campus is like socially

LSR runs at a high tempo. Attendance is taken seriously, societies hold real auditions, and students are juggling coursework, NSS or NCC commitments and society work from the first month. The upside is a campus where almost everyone is doing something, and where you meet people by working with them on a production, a debate or a fest.

Off campus, life spills into Lajpat Nagar, Amar Colony and the cafés nearby, which function as unofficial extensions of the college. South Campus neighbours like Jesus and Mary College, Gargi and Sri Venkateswara are within easy reach, so inter-college friendships are common, especially during fest season.

Traditions every Lady Shri Ram College student knows

  • Tarang: The annual cultural fest, held in March around a theme. Tarang 2025, themed Dhaagon ki Pehchaan, featured Sadho, the Nizami Brothers and Tushar Joshi alongside student theatre, poetry slams and rap battles.
  • Su Swagatam: LSR's formal orientation day that opens each academic year for incoming students.
  • One guest per day: During Tarang, students can bring one outside guest per day, which makes those invites a small social currency.
  • Compulsory NSS, NCC or NSO: Every student enrols in one of the three, so service and sport are part of the LSR routine, not optional extras.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • The Green Cup streak: LSR has won DU's Green Cup for the cleanest and greenest campus 29 years in a row, and students will tell you the lawns are proof.
  • The Suu Kyi centre: A peace centre named after a Nobel laureate alumna, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama. Not many undergraduate colleges can say that.
  • Daryaganj beginnings: Before the red-brick campus existed, LSR's first 299 students studied in Daryaganj.
  • The 100 percent cutoff year: In 2020 LSR's cutoff hit 100 percent for some courses and became a national meme, a story every senior still repeats.

Societies and the Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding diploma give students unusual extras for policy and social sector work. Debating, MUN and the E-Cell are widely seen by students as direct preparation for interviews.

Rivalries and eternal debates

Miranda House is LSR's permanent comparison: two of DU's most famous women's colleges, one in South Campus and one in North, debated every admission season on rankings, faculty and vibe. Closer to home, Jesus and Mary College and Gargi are the South Campus neighbours LSR teams meet most often at fests and competitions. The bigger argument every fresher inherits is North Campus vs South Campus, and LSR students tend to argue for the south.

What Lady Shri Ram College is talking about now

Society Instagram pages double as admissions marketing, and Tarang still drives the biggest week of the year online. Campus conversations in 2026 include faculty and administration debates that students follow closely.
