Miranda House is a women's college on North Campus, founded in 1948, with a red-brick heritage campus, a strong science side and a reputation for outspoken students. Society auditions in August and September decide most friend groups, and Tempest in February is where the whole college shows up.

The story of Miranda House

Miranda House was founded on 7 March 1948 by Sir Maurice Gwyer, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi, and Lady Edwina Mountbatten laid its foundation stone. Classes began in July 1948 with 33 students, and by September enrolment had grown to 105. Founding principal Veda Thakurdas, the first woman to earn an MA in mathematics from Punjab University, led the college until 1956.

Gwyer explained the name in a 1952 college magazine: he admired the actress Carmen Miranda, his own daughter was called Miranda, and Shakespeare's Miranda from The Tempest fit the ideal he had in mind. That last reference is why the college fest is called Tempest. The red-brick campus was designed by Walter Sykes George, the architect behind several of North Campus's best known buildings.

In 1970, students led by Madhu Kishwar voted by an overwhelming majority to abolish the Miss Miranda beauty pageant, objecting to beauty as a criterion for a college contest. The moment set the tone for an activist streak the college is still proud of. Miranda House was ranked the number one college in India by NIRF for seven years up to 2023.

What the campus is like socially

MH is intense, articulate and busy. The college mixes humanities heavyweights like English, History and Political Science with a real science strand, so lab partners and theatre friends often overlap. Debates on the lawns and in the canteen are part of the education, and students take pride in the college's history of speaking up.

Society auditions dominate the first months. Ariels, Mridang, Tanz and the debating societies are famously selective, and getting in shapes your timetable, your friends and your fest season. North Campus around MH, with Hansraj, Kirori Mal and Daulat Ram close by, makes cross-college friendships easy.

Traditions every Mirandian knows

• Tempest: The three-day cultural fest in February, with Battle of Bands, acapella, choir, dance and street theatre competitions. At Tempest 2016, alumnae Neeti Mohan and Shakti Mohan headlined and the crowd broke the barricades twice.
• Society audition season: Every August and September, freshers queue for auditions and interviews. Results day is one of the most emotional days of first year.
• Founding day in March: The college was founded on 7 March 1948, the eve of International Women's Day, a coincidence students enjoy pointing out.

Campus lore and insider spots

• Named after three Mirandas: A film star, the Vice-Chancellor's daughter and a Shakespeare heroine. Few colleges have an origin story that fun.
• The pageant that students abolished: In 1970 MH students voted out the Miss Miranda pageant, a story still told as one of the college's proudest moments.
• Bollywood's favourite campus: The red-brick buildings have appeared in films including Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Fukrey, Special 26 and Kabir Singh.
• Thirty-three students on day one: The college began in 1948 with just 33 students and tripled in two months.

• Ariels: The English dramatics society, active since the 1950s and known for unconventional productions, from Genet's The Maids to experimental mashups.
• Mridang: The Indian dance society, a regular winner on the DU fest circuit and notoriously hard to get into.
• Debating Society: English and Hindi debating that feeds directly into DU's competitive circuit.
• Enactus Miranda House: The social entrepreneurship society, part of the global Enactus network since 2011-12.
• Anukriti: The Hindi dramatics society, running continuously since 1957 with street plays, one-acts and full-length productions.

Careers, internships and placements

MH's placement cell brings in analytics, consulting, banking and education recruiters, but formal placements are only part of the picture. A large share of graduates head to master's programmes, law, journalism, research, the civil services and study abroad.

Students consistently describe societies, especially debating, Enactus and the placement cell's own events, as the real CV builders. The college's activist and academic culture also produces a steady flow of graduates into education, non-profits and public policy.

Rivalries and eternal debates

The permanent comparison is Miranda House vs LSR, DU's two most famous women's colleges, argued every admission season with no winner. On North Campus, MH meets Hindu and Hansraj on the fest circuit, where Tempest's own competitions become a proxy battle: at Tempest 2016, Hindu College Collective won Battle of Bands. And of course there is North Campus vs South Campus, which MH students settle firmly in favour of the north.
