The story of Shri Ram College of Commerce

SRCC began in 1920, when seven businessmen led by Sir Shri Ram set up the Commercial Education Trust and opened The Commercial School. Classes started at 8 Darya Ganj with twelve students and four teachers. The school affiliated with the University of Delhi in 1926, and its annual magazine, Yamuna, first appeared in 1928.

On its Silver Jubilee in 1951, the college was renamed Shri Ram College of Commerce in honour of its founder. It moved to its current North Campus site in 1954 and became co-educational in 1957. In 1963-64 students helped build a swimming pool and gymnasium through volunteer effort, making SRCC the first DU college with a pool, and a bust of Sir Shri Ram went up on campus in 1967.

The 1976 Golden Jubilee year gave the college Crossroads, its signature fest. In 1985 SRCC opened a residence for women students, a first among DU's co-ed colleges, and in 2007 the Delhi government gave its main building heritage status. The college has marked its centenary with events including the 2026 Business Conclave.

What the campus is like socially

SRCC is focused and fast. Almost everyone is studying B.Com (Hons) or Economics (Hons), so classmates are also competitors for the same internships, and the culture rewards people who show up prepared. The upside is a campus full of driven people who love to argue about markets, policy and careers over canteen chai.

Society life is where friendships and reputations are built. With more than fifty societies, from finance cells to dramatics, students often say making a core team in first year shapes the rest of their time at SRCC. • DebSoc's debating calendar: The Debating Society runs Gambit, the Shri Ram Debating Festival, Shri Ram Pre-ABP and a debating masterclass that draw teams from across India.
• Yamuna: The annual college magazine, published since 1928, a century-long record of what students were thinking.

• The student-built pool: In 1963-64 students put in volunteer labour to help build DU's first college swimming pool. Alumni bring it up whenever someone complains about infrastructure.
• The Sir Shri Ram bust: Installed in 1967, it is the campus landmark freshers learn to give directions by.
• Twelve students on day one: India's most competitive commerce college started in Darya Ganj with twelve students and four teachers.
• The Jaitley stadium: In March 2024 the Vice President unveiled the plaque for the Arun Jaitley Multipurpose Stadium, named after the college's most famous alumnus.

Placements are the reason SRCC is a byword for commerce in India. Consulting, banking, investment and FMCG firms recruit on campus, and B.Com and Economics graduates are among the most sought after undergraduates in the country. The college also offers a postgraduate diploma in global business operations.

Students say the real pipeline runs through societies: FIC and the Economics Society prepare people for case interviews and markets roles, DebSoc feeds law, policy and the civil services, and core team experience is what recruiters ask about. Many graduates also go on to CA, MBA programmes or master's degrees abroad.

Hindu College is SRCC's favourite academic sparring partner, with the two compared every year for Economics Honours. SSCBS students argue their management degrees and new Rohini campus beat SRCC's brand, and SRCC students reply with history and placements. St. Stephen's offers a different kind of contrast: liberal arts polish against commerce hustle, a debate DU students never finish.
