The story of Gargi College

Gargi College opened in 1967 as a women's college of the University of Delhi in South Delhi's Siri Fort area. It is named after Gargi Vachaknavi, the philosopher of the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad who debated leading male scholars at King Janaka's court, a choice the college treats as a statement about women's intellectual authority.

Over the decades Gargi built a strong academic base alongside its cultural reputation. It holds an A+ grade from NAAC and Star College status from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, which recognises its life sciences teaching and labs.

The college celebrated its golden jubilee in 2017, and today it runs programmes across the sciences, humanities and commerce. It is one of the anchor colleges of South Campus, close to LSR, Jesus and Mary College and Sri Venkateswara.
