IIM Kozhikode was set up in 1996 as the fifth IIM, and its first batch of 42 students started in 1997 at a temporary campus inside NIT Calicut. Architect Joseph Allen Stein designed the permanent hilltop campus at Kunnamangalam, which then President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated in 2003.
The campus was planned around its landscape: it spans two hills with views of the Western Ghats and relies on rainwater harvesting as its main water source. From 2010 the institute built a Museum of Indian Business History, believed to be the first of its kind, with a large model of the Uru, the traditional wooden ship.
