IIT Patna lives on a 501-acre campus at Bihta, about 35 km from Patna, so students build their social life on campus around a small set of hostels and three fests: Anwesha in January or February, Celesta in late autumn and Infinito for sport.

The story of IIT Patna

IIT Patna was established on 6 August 2008 as one of the second-generation IITs and Bihar's first. With no campus of its own, it started in renovated buildings of the New Government Polytechnic in Pataliputra Colony, Patna.

The foundation stone for a permanent campus at Bihta was laid in 2011 by then HRD minister Kapil Sibal, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the campus on 25 July 2015. The first several batches studied entirely at the city campus, which gives early alumni a strong built-it-from-scratch identity.

Since moving to Bihta, the institute has added a second phase of academic buildings and hostels, an incubation centre opened in 2018 and a Centre for Endangered Language Studies focused on tribal and minority languages of Bihar.

What the campus is like socially

Bihta is a quiet stretch outside Patna, so the campus is where everything happens. Student life is concentrated in a few hostels, the food court and canteens, and the sports grounds, which makes it easy to know a large part of your batch by the end of first year.

Fest season is the high point. Anwesha brings in students from other colleges for cultural, literary and technical events, while Celesta is built around robotics and management contests. In between, clubs for coding, drama, music, dance, photography and debate run most evenings, and the late-night canteen is the default hangout.

• Celesta: The techno-management fest held in October or November, with robotics battles, coding and business contests.

• E-Summit: The entrepreneurship summit run by E-Cell, with founder talks and startup events tied to the campus incubation centre.

Campus lore and insider spots

• The polytechnic years: For its first seven years IIT Patna ran out of a converted government polytechnic in Pataliputra Colony, a story early alumni still tell with pride.
• Hostels named after scientists: Men's hostels are named after APJ Abdul Kalam, CV Raman and Aryabhatta, and the women's hostel, Asima, honours chemist Asima Chatterjee.
• Too new to be haunted: With a campus barely a decade old, IITP has no century-old ghost stories, and students joke that it is too new to be spooky.
• Endangered languages: The institute hosts a centre studying endangered tribal and minority languages of Bihar, an unusual mission for an engineering campus.

The campus incubation centre, opened in 2018, supports hardware and electronics startups, and students interested in building companies can work with it alongside E-Cell. A good number of graduates also choose civil services or higher studies.
