IIM Indore is the 1996 IIM on a 193-acre hilltop campus off Rau-Pithampur Road that started India's first IIM undergraduate programme, the five-year IPM, in 2011, so the campus mixes 18-year-olds straight out of school with CAT-cracked MBA students.

The story of IIM Indore

IIM Indore was registered as a society on 3 October 1996, and Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda laid its foundation stone on 8 December 1996. Prof. Vijendra Nath Asopa became founding director in July 1997, and the first PGP batch of 37 students started on 29 June 1998 in Government Polytechnic College, Rajendra Nagar.

In 2003 the institute moved to its own 193-acre campus on Rau-Pithampur Road. An auditorium followed in 2004 and a sports complex with a swimming pool and amphitheatre in 2011, the same year IIM Indore launched the Five Year Integrated Programme in Management, the first undergraduate programme run by any IIM.

IIM Indore ran programmes in the UAE from 2011 and a Mumbai campus at Powai from 2012, with the Mumbai PGP running until 2019. AMBA accreditation came in 2016 and EQUIS in 2019, completing the triple crown with AACSB. Spiritual, Zen and Sound gardens were added on campus between 2019 and 2023.

What the campus is like socially

Your first term is defined by your section. Section Wars pit sections against each other in a cultural leg with ramp walks, dance, singing, meme-making, photography and a freshers quiz, and a sports leg with football, cricket, badminton and arm wrestling. The friendships and rivalries from those weeks tend to last the whole programme.

Two cohorts share the hill: IPM students who join after Class 12 and PGP students who usually arrive after CAT and often with work experience. Coffee keeps the place running through deadline weeks, and the gardens and hilltop views are where people go to breathe between cases.

• IRIS: The management and cultural fest, started in 2001. It split into Ahvan and Mridang in 2008 and was reborn as one fest in 2013, with events like Ashwamedha, Chanakya, Klueless, Lavanya and Voice of Indore.
• Section Wars: The cultural and sports battles between sections that kick off every new batch.
• Utsaha: A marketing-focused event that gives students hands-on urban and rural marketing exposure.
• i5 Summit: An entrepreneurship and networking summit bringing industry professionals to campus.
• Klueless: IRIS's online treasure hunt, one of the fest's best-known events.

Campus lore and insider spots

• The polytechnic years: The first batches studied at a government polytechnic in Rajendra Nagar before the hilltop campus opened in 2003.
• The first IIM undergrads: IPM students are the original IIM undergrads, and every newer IPM is measured against this one.
• The gardens: The Spiritual, Zen and Sound gardens have become the favourite quiet corners and photo spots.
• Prabandh Shikhar: The campus name, which translates roughly to the peak of management, matches its hilltop setting.

IIM Indore's placements typically span consulting, general management, sales and marketing, and IT and analytics, with consulting firms, banks, FMCG companies and tech firms on the recruiter list. Consulting Club and Finance Club prep are seen as near-essential before summer placements.

IPM students face a unique challenge: competing with work-experienced peers when they reach the MBA years. The IPM industry connect cell and internship cycles are designed to close that gap.

IIM Indore is forever benchmarked against IIM Lucknow, two of the older IIMs just after the ABC trio, on rankings, placements and campus vibe. On the undergrad side, newer IPM programmes at Rohtak and elsewhere get compared with the one that started it all in 2011.
