The story of National Law Institute University Bhopal

National Law Institute University was established by Act No. 41 of 1997, later substituted by Act No. 06 of 2018. Its first academic programme began on 1 September 1998 under founding Director V.S. Rekhi.

The university launched an LL.M. in 2007, the Centre for Business and Commercial Law and the Rajiv Gandhi National Cyber Law Centre in 2008, and the Master of Cyber Law and Information Security in 2011. It publishes the Indian Law Review, the NLIU Law Review and the NLIU Journal of Intellectual Property Law.

What the campus is like socially

NLIU admits about 120 B.A. LL.B. and about 60 B.Sc. LL.B. students a year through CLAT. The science-and-law track gives the campus a slightly different mix from most NLUs, and the cyber law focus draws students interested in technology.

Mooting structures much of student life from second year, and Bhopal's lakes give the city a calm, green backdrop to an intense degree.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Older than CLAT: NLIU was teaching law before the Common Law Admission Test existed, and its students like to remind newer NLUs.
  • Science and law: The B.Sc. LL.B. track means some classmates arrive with a science background.
