Meeting people at National Law University Odisha
NLU Odisha is in Cuttack, not Bhubaneswar: a 50-acre campus at Naraj, between the Mahanadi and Kathajodi rivers. It runs over 20 student societies and an international maritime arbitration moot, IMAM.
NLUO is actually located in Cuttack's CDA Sector 13, roughly 25-30 km from Bhubaneswar proper. The two are twin cities in Odisha's capital region but administratively distinct, and NLUO opened what it calls Asia's largest law library in 2023.
The story of National Law University Odisha
National Law University Odisha was established in 2008 under the National Law University Odisha Act (Act 4 of 2008), and its first batch began in July 2009. Faizan Mustafa was the founding Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Rangin Pallav Tripathy leads the university today.
The university has been on its current campus at CDA Sector 13 since June 2012. In 2023 it opened a library it describes as the largest law library in Asia. The campus has four hostels and an amphitheatre that can seat the entire college.
What the campus is like socially
The riverside location is beautiful and a little remote, which makes NLUO a self-contained world. Hostels, the library and society rooms are where life happens, and the amphitheatre hosts the big gatherings.
For a small campus, NLUO has a dense society scene, from mooting and quizzing to policy, law and literature, and animal welfare. Students joke that you join a society before you finish unpacking.
Traditions every National Law University Odisha student knows
- KAIRAAN: NLUO's annual cultural festival.
- IMAM: The International Maritime Arbitration Moot, NLUO's flagship hosted competition since 2014.
- Society inductions: With more than 20 societies, first-year inductions are a season of their own.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Not Bhubaneswar: Everyone assumes NLUO is in Bhubaneswar. It is in Cuttack, its twin city.
- Between two rivers: The campus sits where the Mahanadi and Kathajodi meet at Naraj, and sunsets by the river are a fixture of student life.
- The big library: Opened in 2023, the library the university calls Asia's largest law library is the new campus landmark.
