Meeting people at National Law University Jodhpur

Last updated: October 2026

NLU Jodhpur is the only National Law University that builds moot court into its core curriculum: students draft memorials and argue orally in every law subject, every semester. Its 55-acre residential campus is at Mandore, outside Jodhpur.

Founded:1999
Size:Small (~580 undergraduates, ~46 postgraduates)
Affiliation:State law university established by Rajasthan government act (1999); recognized by the Bar Council of India and UGC
Campus:55 acres, Mandore, Jodhpur
Known as:NLUJ

Despite being grouped under Jaipur in this dataset, NLU Jodhpur is physically located in the Mandore area of Jodhpur, roughly 340 km from Jaipur, a genuine geographic mismatch. Its actual physical neighbor is NIFT Jodhpur (also grouped under Jaipur here), not any Jaipur-city institution.

The story of National Law University Jodhpur

NLU Jodhpur was established in November 1999 under the National Law University, Jodhpur, Act, 1999, with N.L. Mitra as its first Vice-Chancellor. The first undergraduate and postgraduate batches were admitted in 2001, the first undergraduate batch graduated in 2006, and the first convocation was held in 2007.

Over two decades the university has built 21 specialised centres, including CARTAL for arbitration law, a Centre for Comparative Constitutional Law, the BRICS Law Institute and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Civilisational and Peace Study. Dr. Harpreet Kaur became Vice-Chancellor in 2023.

What the campus is like socially

The campus is fully residential and set on the desert edge of Jodhpur, so hostel life and the academic calendar define everything. Because every subject includes a moot, students are drafting and arguing from the first semester, and courtroom confidence becomes second nature.

The fest calendar alternates: Yuvardha for sport and NH-65 for culture and literature, both biennial. When they run, contingents from law schools across India descend on Mandore.

Traditions every National Law University Jodhpur student knows

  • Court Room Exercises: Every law subject, every semester, includes memorial drafting and oral arguments. No other NLU does this.
  • Yuvardha: The biennial sports festival, started in 2009.
  • NH-65: The biennial cultural and literary festival, started in 2010.
  • Hosted moots: The M.M. Singhvi Bar Council of India Trust Moot, the Surana and Surana National Corporate Law Moot, and the Stetson Environmental Law Moot's North Indian rounds.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • A fest named after a highway: NH-65 takes its name from the national highway the campus sits on.
  • Glasgow, 2004: Students Manmeet Singh Rai and Sagarika Chakraborty won the national rounds of the Louis M. Brown Client Counseling Competition in 2004 and went to the world finals in Glasgow.

How to find your people here

At National Law University Jodhpur, the fastest way in is a moot court team, a committee, or a fest organizing team. Cohorts are small enough that showing up consistently gets noticed fast.

Societies worth knowing at National Law University Jodhpur

  • Moot Court Committee: Selects teams on top of the curriculum's built-in moots. An NLUJ team won the Susan J. Ferrell Inter-cultural Human Rights Moot in 2007.
  • NLUJ Law Review: The flagship student-run journal.
  • Trade, Law and Development: A trade law journal launched in 2009.

Careers, internships and placements

NLUJ graduates go into corporate law firms, arbitration, litigation and further study. The constant mooting gives graduates strong drafting and advocacy habits, which recruiters notice.

CARTAL and the arbitration focus open a path into institutional arbitration, while the journals give research-minded students publication credits early.

Rivalries and eternal debates

NLU Jodhpur versus NLIU Bhopal is one of the classic CLAT-forum comparisons, with GNLU, HNLU and RGNUL also in the mix. On the fest circuit, NH-65 has a reputation that other NLU fests measure themselves against.
