The story of National Law School of India University

NLSIU was created by the National Law School of India Act, 1986, passed by the Karnataka legislature, with N.R. Madhava Menon as its first Vice-Chancellor. Its five-year integrated law degree became the template that the later National Law Universities followed.

The first undergraduate batch enrolled on 1 July 1988, but there was no campus yet. Classes ran at Bangalore University's Central College until November 1991, when the school moved to Nagarbhavi. The founding batches built the moot and debate culture before they had a building of their own.

The Chief Justice of India serves as Chancellor, one of only three national law schools with that link. The Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library holds over 50,000 books and 20,000 journals, and NLSIU has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars.

What the campus is like socially

Everyone lives on campus, so Law School feels like a small town where gossip travels fast. The Student Bar Association coordinates student life through twelve activity-based committees, and which committees you join in first year shapes your friendships and CV for the next five.

The library is the campus's endurance arena before submissions and exams, and moot memorial deadlines are treated like exam week. When students do switch off, it is for Strawberry Fields, Spiritus or a debate tournament that fills the campus with visiting teams.

• Arundhati Katju: Advocate who argued the Section 377 case alongside Menaka Guruswamy and shared the 2019 TIME 100 recognition.
• Gautam Bhatia: Constitutional scholar and novelist, NLSIU 2011 and a Rhodes Scholar, who edits the Indian Constitutional Law and Philosophy blog.
• Shamnad Basheer: IP scholar who founded the SpicyIP blog and IDIA, the trust that helps underprivileged students into law schools. He died in 2019.
• Aparna Kumar: IPS officer who studied at the National Law School, climbed the Seven Summits and won the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award in 2018.

Rivalries and eternal debates

NLSIU versus NALSAR is the comparison every CLAT aspirant argues about, with NLU Delhi and NUJS joining the debate. On the moot circuit, NUJS is the real rival, as both schools trade international wins. Law School's answer to every debate is usually the founding date.
