IIM Calcutta, which everyone calls Joka after its south Kolkata locality, was India's first IIM in 1961, and it still lives up to that legacy with a finance-heavy culture, a lake-dotted campus and two of the oldest fests on the B-school circuit, Intaglio and Carpe Diem.

The story of IIM Calcutta

IIM Calcutta was set up by the Government of India in November 1961 as the country's first national institute for postgraduate management education, in collaboration with MIT's Sloan School of Management, the Government of West Bengal, the Ford Foundation and Indian industry. The idea traced back to the Planning Commission inviting George Robbins of UCLA in 1959 to help plan a management institute. Its early faculty circle included Nobel laureate Paul Samuelson.

For its first years the institute ran out of Emerald Bower on Barrackpore Trunk Road in north Kolkata. Deputy Prime Minister Morarji Desai laid the foundation stone of the Joka campus on 15 December 1968, and the institute moved there in 1975. Architect Christopher Charles Benninger later designed newer campus buildings.

IIM Calcutta went on to mentor two younger IIMs, IIM Ranchi in 2009 and IIM Bodh Gaya in 2015. It is the only Indian business school in the CEMS global alliance and holds AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS accreditation.

What the campus is like socially

Joka is a residential world of its own, about 20 km from central Kolkata. Life is anchored by four hostels: Ramanujan (the Old Hostel), Tagore and Annexe (the White Hostel), New Hostel and Lake View. Students refer to batches by number rather than year, so an alum is as likely to say 32nd batch as 1997.

The academic tone is quant-heavy and finance-first, built around the Financial Research and Trading Lab set up in 2008 with 51 terminals and Bloomberg access. Outside class, the calendar is packed: quizzes several times a month, a cultural fest with pro-nights, and the business summit that set the template for B-school meets in India.

• Intaglio: The business summit, started in 1989 by the 25th batch as the National Business School Meet and renamed Intaglio in 2002. It was the first carbon-neutral B-school event in India in 2010.
• Olympus and Boardroom Challenge: Intaglio's flagship contests: a leadership competition across IIMs and international schools, and a business simulation game.
• Carpe Diem: The cultural fest, with Razzmatazz fashion, Euphoria dance, Armageddon rock and pro-nights that have featured Amit Trivedi, Nucleya and Indian Ocean.
• 7 Lakes Fest: A combined festival that brings business, cultural and sports events together, named after the lakes on campus.
• Batch numbers: Students and alumni identify by PGP batch number, a habit that goes back decades.

Finance is the institute's calling card, helped by the trading lab and the finance club, while the consulting club feeds strategy interviews. The one-year executive programme draws working professionals.
