Jadavpur University is a state university on a 60-acre campus in south Kolkata, with a 26-acre Salt Lake campus, where engineers and humanities students share one gate, one canteen culture and a long tradition of argument. NIRF 2025 ranked it first among India's state public universities.

The story of Jadavpur University

JU was born in the swadeshi movement. After the 1905 partition of Bengal, the National Council of Education, Bengal was founded in March 1906 by 92 members including Rabindranath Tagore, Aurobindo Ghosh, Chittaranjan Das and Rash Behari Ghosh, to offer an Indian-run alternative to colonial education. Zamindar Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury pledged five lakh rupees towards a national university.

In the same year, Tarak Nath Palit's Society for the Promotion of Technical Education founded the Bengal Technical Institute. The two merged on 25 May 1910. When Rash Behari Ghosh died in 1921, his bequest of ten lakh rupees bought 33 acres in Jadavpur, and the engineering college moved there in 1924.

On 24 December 1955 the institution became Jadavpur University, with Triguna Sen as its first Vice-Chancellor. In 1956 poet-critic Buddhadeva Bose set up India's pioneering Department of Comparative Literature. Today JU has about 13,000 students across 37 departments and 21 schools.

JU is famous for adda and argument. Engineering and arts students cross paths constantly, and debates about books, films and politics spill from classrooms into canteens and corridors. The fees are low, the intellectual energy is high, and many students say the conversations outside class taught them as much as the courses.

Student unions are a central part of campus life, with the engineering and arts faculties each having their own, and union elections and posters are part of the yearly rhythm. The surrounding neighbourhood of Jadavpur and south Kolkata, with its cafes, bookshops and street food, extends the campus well past its gates.

• Union elections: Faculty-level student union elections are a defining feature of the JU calendar.
• Canteen adda: Long conversations over cheap tea and snacks are as much a JU tradition as any fest.

• Born of a boycott: JU's founders set out in 1906 to prove Indians could educate Indians, a story every student hears in their first year.
• Rash Behari Ghosh's will: The campus exists because one man's 1921 bequest bought 33 acres in Jadavpur.
• India's first Comparative Literature department: Set up by Buddhadeva Bose in 1956, its very first MA batch included writer Nabaneeta Dev Sen, who later taught there for decades.
• Engineers versus arts: The oldest joke on campus: engineers do not read, and arts students cannot do maths. Both sides keep it going happily.
