Science arrived early and loudly. Belgian Jesuit Fr. Eugene Lafont reached Calcutta in December 1865, set up one of modern India's first science laboratories at the college, and in November 1867 used his observations to warn of a devastating cyclone, helping authorities save lives. In 1876 he co-founded the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science with Mahendralal Sircar. His student Jagadish Chandra Bose went on to pioneer radio research.
In 2006 St. Xavier's became West Bengal's first autonomous college, and it holds an A++ NAAC grade. A separate St. Xavier's University was set up by the same Jesuit community in New Town in 2017, but the college remains independent and is still affiliated to the University of Calcutta.
