ISI Kolkata is a small, tuition-free institute for statistics, mathematics and computer science on Barrackpore Trunk Road in Baranagar, north Kolkata, where undergraduate batches are tiny and students get stipends. Everyone knows everyone, and a lot of social life happens over problem sets and the annual Integration fest.

The story of ISI Kolkata

ISI grew out of a statistical laboratory run by physicist Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis at Presidency College. The institute was founded on 17 December 1931 and registered as a society on 28 April 1932, and in 1953 it moved to Amrapali, a property in Baranagar that became the heart of today's campus.

Mahalanobis's ISI quickly became a meeting point for world science. Norbert Wiener worked with its faculty on prediction theory, and Andrey Kolmogorov wrote a landmark paper on complexity during a 1962 visit. ISI designed India's first analog computer in 1953 and acquired the country's first digital computer, the HEC-2M, in 1956.

In 1959 Parliament passed the Indian Statistical Institute Act, declaring ISI an Institute of National Importance able to award its own degrees. Today it runs the Bachelor of Statistics, Bachelor of Mathematics and Bachelor of Statistical Data Science, plus master's programmes and PhDs.

What the campus is like socially

ISI is intense and intimate. Undergraduate batches are small, so you know your seniors by name and professors are easy to find, and most conversations eventually turn into a maths problem. Because education is tuition-free and students receive stipends, the campus attracts a mix of students who chose it purely for the subject.

Kolkata adds flavour. Students head into the city for food, books and adda, and the institute's long association with Rabindranath Tagore and Bengali intellectual life still shows up in campus culture. Fest season, sport and quizzing are the main social outlets.

• Integration: ISI Kolkata's techno-cultural fest, held over the last weekends of January and revived in 2010 after a ten-year gap. It is entirely student-run and one of Kolkata's biggest campus events.
• Prahelika: Integration's flagship quiz, billed as the biggest campus quiz in Eastern India.
• Integration Sports: A sports chapter added in January 2013, with football, cricket, chess and volleyball.
• Contrapunto: The fest's debate competition, alongside dance, band and panel events.

Campus lore and insider spots

• The dinosaur on campus: ISI geologists found a sauropod in 1958 and excavated it in 1960-61. The roughly 47-foot Barapasaurus tagorei now stands in ISI's Geology Museum.
• Named for Tagore: The dinosaur's name honours Rabindranath Tagore, whose birth centenary fell during the dig. Tagore coined Bengali terms for statistics and wrote for the institute's journal.
• India's computing firsts: Students like to remind IIT friends that India's first analog computer was designed here in 1953.
• Kolmogorov's visit: The Soviet mathematician wrote his landmark complexity paper during a 1962 stay, a favourite piece of ISI trivia.

Admission is through ISI's own entrance test and interview, and seats are limited, so preparation usually starts early with olympiad-style problem solving. Once inside, internships and research projects are the main way to build a profile.

• C. R. Rao (longtime faculty and Director): Legendary statistician who spent over four decades at ISI, including as Director. He won the US National Medal of Science and the 2023 International Prize in Statistics.
• Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay: Computer scientist who earned her PhD at ISI in 1998, became its first woman Director in 2015 and received the Padma Shri in 2022.
• Rajeeva Karandikar: Probabilist with an MStat and PhD from ISI, later Director of the Chennai Mathematical Institute and Chairman of the National Statistical Commission.
