Presidency students still treat the College Street Coffee House right outside the gates as an extension of campus, the same adda spot where alumni like Satyajit Ray, who completed his BA in economics at Presidency College, and Amartya Sen once held court for hours over coffee.

The story of Presidency University Kolkata

Presidency began in 1817 as Hindu College, set up with the backing of Bengali patrons to offer modern, English-medium education. In May 1826 a 17-year-old teacher named Henry Louis Vivian Derozio joined, encouraged his students to found the Academic Association, a debating club, and inspired the Young Bengal movement of free-thinking reformers. Conservative parents pushed back and the college dismissed him in April 1831. He died of cholera that December, aged 22.

Renamed Presidency College in 1855, it became the leading college of the University of Calcutta. In the early 20th century its classrooms held an astonishing generation: Satyendra Nath Bose topped his batch in 1913, with Meghnad Saha second, both taught by Jagadish Chandra Bose and Prafulla Chandra Ray.

In 2010 the college became Presidency University. A New Town campus opened in February 2019, and a Himalayan centre at Kurseong is in development. The university runs 16 departments across natural and mathematical sciences and the humanities and social sciences, and holds an A grade from NAAC.

What the campus is like socially

Presidency life is small, intense and very talkative. Departments are compact, classes are discussion-heavy and the habit of arguing about ideas, politics and films outside class is part of the education. College Street, with its second-hand book stalls and Boipara crowds, is the natural extension of campus.

The Indian Coffee House across the road is the spiritual common room, the same adda spot where generations of students and alumni, including Satyajit Ray, have argued for hours over coffee. Student politics is lively and very visible, and general body meetings and campus debates are a big part of how issues get discussed.

Traditions every Presidencian knows

  • Coffee House adda: Long conversations at the Indian Coffee House on College Street are the most Presidency ritual there is.
  • College Street book hunts: Students comb the stalls of Boipara outside the gate for cheap textbooks and rare finds.
  • Department fests: Departments run their own fests and lecture series, with Physics's Presision among the best known.
  • Debate culture: From Derozio's Academic Association in 1828 to today, open debate is the campus habit.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Bose and Saha, one batch: Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha finished first and second in the same Presidency batch.
  • The Oaten incident: In 1916 Professor E.F. Oaten was attacked by students after remarks about Indian culture. Subhas Chandra Bose was expelled and finished his degree at Scottish Church College.
  • The teenage teacher: Derozio was only 17 when he started teaching here, and he changed Bengal's intellectual history within five years.
  • Baker Laboratory: The old science building where some of India's greatest physicists and chemists learned and taught.
