The story of St. Xavier's College Mumbai

St. Xavier's opened on 2 January 1869, founded by German Jesuits and named after St. Francis Xavier. It quickly became one of Bombay's leading colleges, teaching arts and science from its Fort campus close to the city's great railway terminus.

The campus buildings are Indo-Gothic and recognised as heritage structures by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, which is why the college shows up in so many photographs of South Mumbai.

In 2010 Xavier's became the first college in Mumbai to receive autonomous status from the UGC, giving it control over its own curriculum and exams. Over the years it has also built a family of institutes around it, including the Xavier Institute of Communications and the Xavier Institute of Management and Research.

Xavier's is compact, central and always busy. The quadrangle, corridors and canteen fill between lectures, and South Mumbai is right outside the gate, from Kala Ghoda's galleries to Churchgate and Marine Drive. Many students commute by local train, so the day often starts and ends at CST.

Campus life is shaped by its fests and associations. Malhar takes over the second half of the year for hundreds of volunteers, the Indian Music Group keeps classical music central with Janfest and departments add their own seminars and events through the year.
