The story of IIM Tiruchirappalli

IIM Tiruchirappalli was instituted on 4 January 2011 as the eleventh IIM. Its first batch studied on the campus of NIT Trichy, its older and more famous neighbour, while a permanent home was planned.

The permanent campus on the Tiruchirappalli-Pudukkottai highway spans 172.27 acres and was built at a cost of about Rs 584 crore. CnT Architects designed it around the idea of a campus as a community of learners, with man-made water bodies at the centre to deal with the region's water scarcity and an aim of near net-zero energy use. It was completed in 2017.

A Chennai campus for executive education followed in 2012, and a two-year MBA in HR management launched in 2020. IIM Trichy holds AMBA accreditation and was ranked 16th by NIRF among management schools in 2025. Pawan Kumar Singh is director and Jalaj Dani is chairman.

What the campus is like socially

Student life mixes heavy workloads with a lively social scene. Assignments, quizzes and presentations come at you with a vengeance, but from Thursday to Sunday the PGP 6 hostel is the official party house, under the unofficial motto work hard, party harder.

Trichy's hot, dry plains have been turned into a deliberately green campus, and each new batch plants saplings during induction, followed by a community breakfast with faculty, staff and families. When students need a break, they hike the nearby hills they jokingly call Mt. Unknown, Mt. Who Cares and Mt. Newly Discovered.
