IIM Amritsar is a 2015 IIM that spent its first decade in borrowed buildings near the Golden Temple before moving to a 61-acre campus at Manawala, and its culture is all hustle: early starts, packed club calendars and the AArunya fest.

The story of IIM Amritsar

The IIM Amritsar Society was registered on 27 July 2015, and the first MBA batch began in August 2015. Its Board of Governance was constituted on 14 October 2015. With no campus of its own, classes ran from the Punjab Institute of Technology building, later the Government Polytechnic College, on GT Road.

The foundation stone for the permanent campus was laid in June 2016, but the original 2022 deadline slipped over land issues. The institute finally moved to its 61-acre campus at Manawala on the Amritsar-Jalandhar road, built at an estimated cost of over Rs 600 crore, around the same time Dr Samir Kumar Srivastav took over as director.

Today IIM Amritsar runs a flagship two-year MBA, specialised MBAs in business analytics and HR, an executive MBA, a PhD and an MSc in Data Science and Management with IIT Ropar, for roughly 700 students.

What the campus is like socially

The pace is famous among students. A typical day starts at 6:30 AM, classes run from 9:15 AM to 4 PM in four 75-minute sessions, and group work carries on until about 10 PM. Club acronyms like FEC, ABC and HRithvi are part of everyday conversation.

Amritsar itself is a big part of the experience. Early batches lived close to the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh, and students treat the city's food, history and holy-city identity as a point of pride no other IIM can claim.

• AArunya: The annual cultural, sports and management fest, now past its 10th edition.
• Elucidate: The case study competition run by Stratagem, the strategy and consulting club, as part of AArunya.
• 6:30 AM starts: A typical day begins at 6:30 AM and group work runs to about 10 PM, a rhythm every batch bonds over.

• The unsold complex: The boys' hostel was once a trust-owned commercial complex near the Golden Temple that had failed to sell in four auctions.
• The GT Road years: For about a decade, classes ran from a polytechnic building on GT Road, which alumni wear as a badge of scrappiness.
• Flats near the airport: Later batches lived in furnished 2 to 3 BHK flats about 2 km from the airport.

Rivalries and eternal debates

IIM Amritsar is benchmarked constantly against its 2015 classmates, especially IIM Nagpur and IIM Sambalpur, on cutoffs, fees and placements. Students argue the new Manawala campus finally levels the field.
