The story of IIM Bangalore
IIM Bangalore was inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 28 October 1973, with banker T.A. Pai as first chairman and N.S. Ramaswamy, previously director of NITIE, as founding director. The Karnataka government gave land free and contributed Rs 30 lakh to the corpus, and the first classes ran in rented rooms including at St. Joseph's College of Commerce.
The original mission was narrow: train managers for India's public sector, from electricity boards to state enterprises like HMT and BEML. Under directors Joe Philip and K.R.S. Murthy, and with economic liberalisation, IIMB shifted toward mainstream business management.
The permanent campus was designed by B.V. Doshi, who won the Pritzker Prize in 2018, drawing on Fatehpur Sikri and the Meenakshi Temple. Today IIMB runs the two-year MBA, an executive MBA, business analytics and public policy programmes, a doctoral programme and, more recently, undergraduate programmes, with a second campus near Jigani under development.

Everyone lives on campus in single rooms across ten hostel blocks. The mess serves four meals a day and the night canteen keeps case-prep groups going late.
