Meeting people at NIFT Bengaluru

Last updated: October 2026

NIFT Bengaluru is the institute's HSR Layout campus, opened in 1997, set in a tree-lined neighbourhood in the middle of the city's startup belt. It runs undergraduate design and technology programmes and three master's programmes.

Area:HSR Layout
Founded:1997
Size:Small (single specialized fashion/design campus, cohort-based intake)
Affiliation:Institute of National Importance under the NIFT Act, 2006; Ministry of Textiles, Government of India
Campus:HSR Layout, Bengaluru
Known as:NIFT Bangalore

NIFT Bengaluru sits inside HSR Layout's PWD Quarters sector, and its Cultural Club runs the annual fest Spectrum, with each year's edition given its own theme name (2020's edition was themed 'Orenda').

The story of NIFT Bengaluru

NIFT was born in Delhi in 1986 with help from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, and expanded to five more cities in 1995. Bengaluru followed in 1997, making it one of the network's early campuses rather than a recent addition.

The 2006 NIFT Act made NIFT a statutory institute with its own degrees. Bengaluru offers B.Des programmes in fashion, textile, knitwear and accessory design and fashion communication, a B.F.Tech in apparel production, and master's programmes in design, fashion management and fashion technology.

What the campus is like socially

HSR Layout gives NIFT Bengaluru an unusual setting: a design school surrounded by startups, cafes and co-working spaces. Students describe a calmer, greener campus than the Delhi flagship, with an amphitheatre, auditorium, photo lab and Mac labs as the hangouts that matter.

The resource centre, with over 13,000 books and fashion forecasting tools, gets crowded before juries. The city's tech economy shapes ambitions too: many students eye e-commerce and digital roles as much as studio work.

Traditions every NIFTian knows

  • Spectrum: The annual fest, run by the Cultural Club, with each edition given its own theme. Students from other Bengaluru colleges compete in fashion, dance, music and literary events.
  • Craft Cluster Initiative: NIFT-wide fieldwork with artisan communities, which Bengaluru connects to Karnataka's craft and silk traditions.
  • Graduation show: Final-year collections and projects on show for industry.
  • Converge: The inter-campus NIFT sports meet.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • The startup neighbour: HSR Layout is one of Bengaluru's startup hubs, so the line between design school and tech scene is thin.
  • The amphitheatre: The open-air amphitheatre is where rehearsals, breaks and fest nights happen.

How to find your people here

At NIFT Bengaluru, your studio batch is your first real social circle. Beyond that, the fest committees and design clubs are where you meet people from other years and departments.

Careers, internships and placements

Placements run across NIFT campuses, and Bengaluru students compete nationally. The city's e-commerce and fashion-tech companies make roles in merchandising, trend analysis, digital content and product design especially visible here.

As at every NIFT, internships and the graduation project are the real hiring signals, and a strong portfolio does more for offers than grades.

Notable alumni

  • Gulshan Devaiah: Actor known for Shaitan and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. A NIFT graduate, he worked in fashion for about ten years and taught fashion in Bengaluru before acting.

Rivalries and eternal debates

Bengaluru's debates run along two lines: NIFT versus NID, and NIFT versus the city's private design schools. Inside the network, Converge gives Bengaluru its chance to settle scores with Hyderabad, Chennai and the Delhi flagship.
