NIFT began in Delhi in 1986 with help from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. Hyderabad joined in 1995 as one of five new campuses opened together, and moved into its permanent campus near the city's IT hub in 1999.
The 2006 NIFT Act gave the institute statutory status and its own degree powers. Hyderabad offers undergraduate programmes in fashion design, textile design, apparel production, accessory design, knitwear design and fashion communication, plus a Master of Fashion Management.
