Meeting people at IIIT Hyderabad
IIIT Hyderabad is a small, research-heavy computer science and electronics campus of about 1,900 students on 66 acres in Gachibowli, next to Hyderabad's IT corridor. It opened in 1998 as India's first IIIT, and undergrads here are encouraged to start research long before graduation.
IIIT-H's compact 66-acre Gachibowli campus directly neighbours ISB and TCS's CMC campus on the Old Bombay Highway, and its research-heavy, low student-faculty-ratio culture shows up in a competitive-programming scene strong enough to send regular teams to the ACM-ICPC World Finals.
The story of IIIT Hyderabad
IIIT Hyderabad admitted its first batch of 50 students on 2 September 1998. It was set up as a not-for-profit public-private partnership, the first IIIT built on this model, and its first home was a District Collectorate and courts complex converted into classrooms, labs and hostels in about 100 days.
Prof. Narendra Ahuja was the first director, and Turing Award winner Prof. Raj Reddy was founding chairman of the governing council. Faculty such as Rajeev Sangal and P. J. Narayanan shaped an unusual idea for Indian undergrad education: you did not have to finish your degree to start doing research.
The first batch graduated into the 2002 IT downturn, yet by 2012-13 the institute was being described as top of the country for placements. It is now a deemed university, NIRF 2025 ranked it 38th among engineering institutions, and its model became the template for many IIITs that followed.
What the campus is like socially
IIIT-H feels like a research lab with hostels attached. Batches are small, labs stay busy late, and seeing an undergrad co-author a paper is normal rather than remarkable. The dual-degree programmes, which add an MS by research to the BTech, pull many students into research groups early.
Social life runs through the four houses, Aakash, Agni, Prithvi and Vayu, which compete in cultural and sports events all year, plus a dense canteen culture. Students talk in acronyms: VC for Vindhya Canteen, BBC for the Basketball Canteen breakfast spot and JC for the Juice Canteen, and a bakery that stays open from 4 pm to 4 am keeps deadline week fed.
Traditions every IIITian knows
- Felicity: IIIT-H's three-day techno-cultural fest, held in February. The 2025 edition ran from 14 to 16 February.
- Infinium: The technical fest focused on hackathons and coding contests.
- House competitions: Aakash, Agni, Prithvi and Vayu battle through the year in cultural and sports events, giving freshers an instant tribe.
- Late-night bakery runs: With a campus bakery open from 4 pm to 4 am, midnight brownie runs are part of exam season.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Collectorate beginnings: The first batch studied and lived in a converted District Collectorate and courts complex, with judges' quarters turned into hostels.
- A Tale of Toilets: A 2022 article in Ping, the student magazine, rated campus washrooms on a five-point scale. It became a cult read, crowning Vindhya Level 3 the best.
- The sambar meet-cute: Scaler co-founders Anshuman Singh and Abhimanyu Saxena first met when one spilled sambar on the other while rushing to class.
- OBH: Palash Nivas is still known as the Old Boys Hostel, and every generation has stories about it.

Careers, internships and placements
IIIT-H is known for very strong outcomes in computer science and electronics, with big tech, product companies and finance firms recruiting regularly. Because research is built into the degree, many graduates also head for PhDs, research labs or AI roles.
Entrepreneurship is a respected path too, supported by the institute's incubation centre. Admission routes include JEE Main, the institute's own UGEE with an interview, Olympiad representation, DASA and lateral entry for dual degrees.
Notable alumni
- Anshuman Singh: 2010 batch, among the first engineers Facebook hired directly from India, later co-founder of InterviewBit and Scaler.
- Abhimanyu Saxena: 2010 batch, co-founder of InterviewBit and Scaler, after stints at Progress Software and Fab.com.
- Siva Reddy: BTech and MS from IIIT-H, now a professor at McGill and core member of Mila, creator of the CoQA benchmark and a 2026 Sloan Research Fellow.
Rivalries and eternal debates
The first question IIIT-H students get is whether it is the same as IIT Hyderabad. It is not, and that mix-up fuels a friendly rivalry, with IIIT-H fans pointing to its computer science research. Inside campus, CSE versus ECE and BTech versus dual degree are the debates that never end, and every admission season brings the JEE dilemma of an IIT seat in another branch versus CSE at IIIT-H.
What IIIT Hyderabad is talking about now
AI research is the campus buzz, from language technologies to computer vision, and student startup activity keeps growing alongside it.
