IIT Guwahati's fully residential campus sits directly on the Brahmaputra's northern bank with hills on its other sides, and its Techniche fest runs the Guwahati Half Marathon alongside its techno-management events, a combination unique to this campus among IITs.

The story of IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati traces back to the 1985 Assam Accord, signed between the All Assam Students Union and the Government of India, which promised the state an IIT. A site at Misa in Nagaon district was chosen first, but difficulties there led the project to move to North Guwahati.

The institute was formally established in 1994 as the sixth IIT. Prof. Dhirendra Nath Buragohain, a civil engineering professor from IIT Bombay, joined as founding director in July 1994 and led it until 2003. The first BTech batch arrived through JEE in 1995.

Since then IITG has grown well beyond its engineering core, adding schools in areas like data science and AI, business, energy, health and rural technology. It also hosts Param Ishan, a supercomputer set up with C-DAC that was the fastest in Northeast India when installed.

What the campus is like socially

IITG is regularly called the most scenic IIT, and students make the most of it: evening walks by the lake, sunsets over the Brahmaputra and hill views from the academic complex. The campus is self-contained, and Guwahati city is across the river, so most social life stays inside the gates.

Hostels are named after rivers of the Northeast, and every hostel has its own reputation and teams for inter-hostel competitions. Beyond hostels, the fest teams for Alcheringa and Techniche and the clubs under the Gymkhana are where most students build their circle, often with friends from very different parts of India.

Traditions every IIT Guwahati student knows

  • Alcheringa: IITG's cultural fest, started in 1996 and held towards the end of January over three days and four nights. Its rock band contest Rock-o-Phonix is one of India's best known.
  • Techniche: The techno-management fest, started in 1999, with competitions, an industry conclave and a lecture series that has hosted scientists and astronauts.
  • Technothlon: A reasoning contest for school students run by Techniche, taken by students across India and abroad. Many IITG students first met the institute through it.
  • Guwahati Half Marathon: Organised as part of Techniche, it has grown into one of the biggest running events in Northeast India.
  • Udaan: Alcheringa's social outreach programme, started in 2011, in which students visit and work with underprivileged children in cities across India.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • River-named hostels: Hostels carry the names of Northeast rivers, such as Brahmaputra, Manas, Barak, Kameng, Siang, Dihing, Kapili, Umiam and Subansiri.
  • Brahmaputra sunsets: Watching the sun set over the river from campus is IITG's unofficial ritual and its most shared photo.
  • The IIT that almost was in Nagaon: Few students know the institute was first planned at Misa in Nagaon district before moving to North Guwahati.
  • Born from a peace accord: IITG exists because the 1985 Assam Accord promised the state an IIT, a story rare among Indian campuses.

Careers, internships and placements

IITG's placement season runs in phases, with recruiters across software, quant, finance, consulting and core engineering, and public sector companies also visiting. Computer science and electrical branches draw the most recruiter interest.

Students often say that coding skills, projects and a leadership role in a fest or club are what set CVs apart. The newer schools in data science and business have widened the options, and E-Cell supports students interested in startups.

Notable alumni

  • Prabhat Gupta: Co-founder of the online holiday marketplace TravelTriangle.

Rivalries and eternal debates

IITG gets compared with every other IIT on JEE forums, usually as a trade-off between older brands and its campus, faculty attention and Northeast setting. Its students rarely lose the argument about which IIT is prettiest. On campus, the friendly rivalry is between the Techniche crowd and the Alcheringa crowd over whose fest is bigger.
