Meeting people at IIT Kanpur
IIT Kanpur is a 1,055-acre residential campus 15 km west of Kanpur city where almost all social life runs through the halls and three big fests: Antaragni, Techkriti and Udghosh. It is also where India's first computer science course began, on an IBM 1620, in 1963.
IIT Kanpur was the first institution in India to teach computer science, running classes on an IBM 1620 in 1963, and its campus was designed by architect Achyut Kanvinde with US-university consortium support during its formative decade, a founding story distinct from every other IIT.
The story of IIT Kanpur
IIT Kanpur was registered as a society on 2 November 1959 and began with about 100 students in borrowed rooms at the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Kanpur city. Its founding director, P.K. Kelkar, pushed for an open campus, and architect Achyut Kanvinde designed one: early photos show no boundary walls at all. By March 1963 the institute had moved to its permanent site on the Grand Trunk Road at Kalyanpur.
For its first decade, from 1962 to 1972, IITK was mentored by the Kanpur Indo-American Programme, a consortium of nine US universities including MIT, Caltech, UC Berkeley, Princeton and Purdue. That partnership shaped its labs and curriculum, and it is why IITK built things no other Indian campus had, from a flight laboratory with its own airstrip to India's first academic computer.
That computer, an IBM 1620, arrived in August 1963, famously carried onto campus on a bullock cart. The institute ran India's first computer science course on it the same year and launched an independent computer science programme in 1971. In 2002, Professor Manindra Agrawal and two of his undergraduates, Neeraj Kayal and Nitin Saxena, published the AKS primality test, a result in theoretical computer science that made the campus famous among mathematicians worldwide.
What the campus is like socially
IITK is far from the city, so the campus is the social world. Students live in numbered halls of residence, and hall identity is strong: inter-hall sports, cultural and tech competitions fill the calendar, and your hall is often where your closest friends come from. The Students' Gymkhana runs the councils and clubs, and most first-years try several clubs before settling into one or two.
The vibe is academically intense, with a reputation for tough relative grading, but evenings are busy: club meetings, practice for fests, late-night canteen runs and long walks on the skyways that link the academic buildings. Kanpur's distance from the big metros means fewer weekend escapes than at Delhi or Bombay, which students say makes the batch bond faster.
Traditions every IIT Kanpur student knows
- Antaragni: The cultural fest, started in 1965 and held every October. It draws college teams from across India for music, dance, drama, literary events and pro nights, and it is almost entirely student-run.
- Techkriti: The technical and entrepreneurship fest, first held in 1995 and usually in March. Expect robotics, coding contests, hackathons and startup pitches over four days.
- Udghosh: IITK's inter-college sports fest, started in 2004 and usually held in September, when teams from other campuses come to play on IITK's grounds.
- Inter-hall competitions: Through the year, halls compete against each other in sports, cultural and tech events. For many students this is where hall loyalty, and most first-year friendships, are built.
- E-Summit: The entrepreneurship summit run by E-Cell IITK, with talks, startup competitions and investor sessions for students thinking about building something.
Campus lore and insider spots
- The bullock cart computer: The photo of India's first academic computer, the IBM 1620, being brought onto campus on a bullock cart with rubber-padded wheels is still a favourite piece of IITK history.
- The Faculty Building: Alumni joke that it has a thousand big and small openings, so newcomers struggle to find the main entrance. The breezy corridors were designed for conversation.
- The skyways: Elevated walkways connect the Faculty Building to its neighbours. In summer they are scattered with yellow Amaltas flowers, a favourite photo spot.
- Concerts in the Hall 1 quadrangle: IITK's Music Club once hosted Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ustad Allahrakha, who performed in the Hall 1 quadrangle.
- The campus airstrip: IITK has its own airfield for flight testing and gliding, a rare sight on an Indian campus.
- P.K. Kelkar Library: Named after the founding director in 2002, its raw exposed-brick architecture is one of the most photographed parts of campus.

Careers, internships and placements
IITK runs a central placement season every December, with recruiters across software, quant finance, consulting, core engineering and analytics. Computer science and data-related branches draw the most attention, and the institute's strength in CS goes back to the 1960s. Summer internships in the pre-final year often turn into offers.
A large share of students also go abroad for MS or PhD programmes, following a long line of IITK graduates in academia. E-Cell and the institute's incubator have pushed a stronger founder culture in recent years, and fest leadership roles are often treated as serious resume lines alongside CGPA.

Rivalries and eternal debates
The eternal debate is IIT Kanpur versus IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi: Kanpur fans point to academic rigour and a computer science legacy older than any other in India, while the other side points to metro-city internships and connectivity. Antaragni is constantly compared with Mood Indigo at IIT Bombay and Saarang at IIT Madras, and Techkriti trades friendly claims about size with Techfest. Inside campus, the sharpest rivalries are between halls, settled every year on the sports field and the stage.
