Meeting people at IIT Kharagpur

Last updated: October 2026

IIT Kharagpur is India's first IIT and its biggest campus, a self-contained township near Kharagpur town where your hall of residence is your identity for four years and the year peaks with Illu and Rangoli at Diwali and Spring Fest in January.

Area:Kharagpur, West Bengal (120 km southwest of Kolkata)
Founded:1951
Size:very large (2,200-acre campus, about 14,800 students, roughly 22,000 total campus residents)
Affiliation:Institute of National Importance / Institute of Eminence (first IIT)
Campus:About 2,100 acres, Hijli, Kharagpur
Known as:KGP

IIT Kharagpur's campus was built on the grounds of the former Hijli Detention Camp, where independence-movement activists were imprisoned, a specific colonial-era site history unique to this campus among the IITs.

The story of IIT Kharagpur

IIT Kharagpur began in May 1950 as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute, working out of rented buildings in Calcutta. In September 1950 it moved to Hijli, near Kharagpur, into the former Hijli Detention Camp, where the British had held Indian freedom fighters.

The institute was formally inaugurated on 18 August 1951 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, with 224 students and 42 teachers across ten departments. At the first convocation in 1956, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said that in the place of the Hijli Detention Camp now stood a fine monument of India.

The old detention camp building, Shaheed Bhawan, now houses the Nehru Museum of Science and Technology. IIT Kharagpur was named an Institute of Eminence in 2019. Its motto, Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam, means excellence in action is yoga.

What the campus is like socially

KGP is a small town of its own, with a market, hospital, bank and miles of roads, and Kolkata a train ride away. That isolation is the point: freshers are assigned to a hall of residence for their whole degree, and halls work like houses, competing in sports, culture and tech through the inter-hall General Championship.

Campus life comes with its own vocabulary, and picking up the slang is a rite of passage. Evenings mean night canteen runs and long walks along Scholars Avenue, and the build-up to Illu, Spring Fest and Kshitij pulls whole halls into weeks of late-night work together. Ask any KGPian and they will tell you that is where the friendships come from.

Traditions every KGPian knows

  • Illumination and Rangoli: KGP's Diwali tradition. Halls build giant bamboo frames, called chatais, covered in thousands of hand-lit diyas, and create huge sand rangolis, competing for Best Illu and Best Rangoli. Everything is student-made.
  • Spring Fest: The socio-cultural fest, running since 1960 and held every January, with Star Nites, street play competition Nukkad, rock band contest Wildfire and dozens of other events.
  • Kshitij: The techno-management fest held in January or February, billed as one of Asia's largest, with robotics, hackathons and business events.
  • Inter-hall General Championship: Halls compete all year in sports, culture and tech, and hall pride runs deep.
  • Orientation and hall life: Freshers are inducted into their hall in their first weeks, and that hall stays their home and their team for the whole degree.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Shaheed Bhawan: The domed building was once the Hijli Detention Camp, and is now the Nehru Museum of Science and Technology, complete with outdoor exhibits.
  • Scholars Avenue: The main road through campus and its social spine, lined with halls and the place most students walk every day.
  • Nehru's line: Nehru's 1956 convocation remark about a fine monument of India standing where the detention camp once was is still quoted on campus.
  • KGP slang: Kharagpur has its own campus dialect, with nicknames for freshers, toppers and departments that every new student learns quickly.
  • Tagore Open Air Theatre: The venue for Spring Fest's Star Nites and many of the year's biggest gatherings.

Societies worth knowing at IIT Kharagpur

  • Technology Students' Gymkhana: The umbrella body running KGP's societies, sports and inter-hall competitions.
  • Technology Robotix Society: The flagship robotics society, which runs Robotix and works with student teams on autonomous systems.
  • Debating Society and Quiz Club: Strong competitive circuits, with members travelling to national debates and quizzes.
  • Technology Dramatics Society: Home of campus theatre. Several TVF actors and writers started out in KGP's drama scene.

  • E-Cell: The entrepreneurship cell, linked to the institute's school of entrepreneurship and campus incubator.

Careers, internships and placements

KGP runs one of the largest placement drives among the IITs, with a mix of software, finance, consulting and core engineering recruiters. The institute's old strengths in metallurgy, mining, ocean engineering and aerospace keep core companies on campus alongside the tech firms.

Consulting and finance clubs have grown in recent years and help students prepare for those roles, while E-Cell and the campus incubator support founders. Branch, society roles and internship record all shape which companies a student can target.

Notable alumni

  • Sundar Pichai: CEO of Google and Alphabet, a 1993 BTech graduate in metallurgical engineering.
  • Arvind Kejriwal: Former Chief Minister of Delhi and founder of the Aam Aadmi Party, a 1989 mechanical engineering graduate.
  • Biswa Kalyan Rath: Stand-up comedian and writer, who studied at IIT Kharagpur before turning to comedy.
  • Jitendra Kumar: Actor known for Kota Factory and Panchayat, who acted in campus plays as a KGP student.
  • Biswapati Sarkar: TVF writer and actor, a KGP alumnus who brought fellow KGPian Jitendra Kumar into TVF.
  • Arjun Malhotra: Co-founder of HCL, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus.

Rivalries and eternal debates

As the first IIT, KGP enjoys reminding everyone that the others came later. The constant debate is with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi over city access versus KGP's size and heritage, and Spring Fest is always measured against Mood Indigo and Rendezvous. Inside campus, nothing is as heated as hall versus hall, whether on Illu night or in the General Championship.
