Meeting people at NIFT Delhi

Last updated: October 2026

NIFT Delhi is the original and largest campus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, the only one that runs every NIFT programme, housed in a Hauz Khas building built around a stepwell. Life here runs on studio deadlines, juries, craft-cluster fieldwork and Spectrum, the annual fest.

Area:Hauz Khas, New Delhi
Founded:1986
Size:small-to-mid, specialized (design/fashion)
Affiliation:autonomous (statutory institute, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India)
Campus:Hauz Khas, New Delhi
Known as:NIFT Delhi, or just NIFT; students call themselves NIFTians

NIFT Delhi's Hauz Khas campus was designed by architect B.V. Doshi, and its annual fest Spectrum draws students from other Delhi/NCR colleges for fashion shows alongside performing arts and literary events.

The story of NIFT Delhi

The Government of India set up NIFT in 1986 to train professionals for a fast-growing apparel export industry. New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, founded in 1944, collaborated in building the institute, and the first fashion design course started in early 1987. In May 1989 NIFT showed its first batch of trained designers on the runway.

Delhi was where it all began. The institute was first housed in a small part of the Indraprastha Stadium, with a single Fashion Design programme in a temporary two-room setup, before moving to its permanent Hauz Khas campus in 1994. NIFT credits that building to architect B.V. Doshi, and its central stepwell, inspired by traditional baolis, doubles as rainwater conservation.

In 1995 NIFT expanded to Chennai, Kolkata, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Navi Mumbai, and the network kept growing past a dozen campuses. In 2006 the NIFT Act of Parliament made it a statutory institute able to award its own degrees. NIFT has since taken on national projects too: the Indian Army's digital disruptive camouflage uniform, adopted in 2022, was designed in association with NIFT.

What the campus is like socially

Delhi is NIFT's biggest campus, with seven bachelor's and three master's programmes and the largest student strength in the network. That mix of fashion, accessory, textile, knitwear and communication designers, plus fashion technologists and management students, makes the corridors busier and more varied than any other NIFT. Studios, labs and the stepwell courtyard are where most of the socialising happens, usually around a deadline.

The rhythm is studio first. Projects end in a jury, a faculty panel that reviews and questions your work, and the night before a jury is a shared ritual of half-finished garments and borrowed sewing machines. Hauz Khas helps: the neighbourhood's cafes, the Deer Park and the old Hauz Khas Complex are a short walk away, so shoots, sketching sessions and breaks spill out of campus.

Traditions every NIFTian knows

  • Spectrum: NIFT Delhi's annual fest, with fashion shows alongside performing arts, sports, debates and literary events. Students from other Delhi-NCR colleges come in to compete.
  • Craft Cluster Initiative: NIFT's structured engagement with India's handloom and handicraft traditions. Students work with craft communities across the country, and the experience becomes a core part of many portfolios.
  • Graduation show: Final-year students present their collections and projects on the runway and in exhibitions, the biggest public moment of the NIFT year.
  • Converge: NIFT's inter-campus sporting meet, where the Sports Club prepares teams to represent Delhi against the other campuses.
  • Juries: Every studio project ends with a panel review. It is the most talked-about part of NIFT life and the reason for most all-nighters.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • The stadium years: Before Hauz Khas, NIFT started in a small corner of the Indraprastha Stadium. Few freshers know their institute began next to a sports arena.
  • The stepwell: The baoli-inspired well at the centre of the building is both a rainwater system and the campus's favourite photo spot.
  • Hauz Khas next door: The 14th-century Hauz Khas Complex and Deer Park sit close to campus, and they work as an unofficial extension for shoots and sketching.
  • The camouflage connection: NIFT helped design the Indian Army's 2022 digital disruptive camouflage uniform, a fact NIFTians like to drop when relatives call it a tailoring course.

How to find your people here

At NIFT Delhi, your studio batch is your first real social circle. Beyond that, the fest committees and design clubs are where you meet people from other years and departments.

Careers, internships and placements

NIFT runs placements centrally across its campuses, and recruiters range from apparel exporters and retail chains to e-commerce, accessories and lifestyle brands. Delhi's advantage is breadth: with every programme under one roof, design, technology and management students all sit in the same pool.

The real career currency is the portfolio. Internships during the degree, craft-cluster documentation and the graduation collection are what recruiters ask about, and many students land their first job through an internship that turns into an offer. Some graduates go straight to their own labels, a path the Entrepreneurship Club supports.

Notable alumni

  • Manish Arora: Designer who graduated from NIFT New Delhi in 1994 with the Best Student Award, began showing at Paris Fashion Week in 2007 and later led Paco Rabanne's womenswear.
  • Prabal Gurung: New York designer who studied at NIFT New Delhi before Parsons, launched his label in 2009 and has dressed Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris.
  • Nikita Anand: Won Femina Miss India Universe 2003 while in her second year at NIFT Delhi, then moved into television and films.
  • Rohit Bal: Celebrated couturier who did a short course at NIFT and later taught there as guest faculty; known for his lotus and peacock motifs. He died in 2024.
  • Devoleena Bhattacharjee: Television actor best known as Gopi in Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, who studied at NIFT in New Delhi.

Rivalries and eternal debates

The eternal debate is NIFT versus NID: fashion and apparel focus against NID's broader product and communication design, argued every admission season. Inside the network, Delhi carries an unspoken first-among-equals status as the original campus, which Mumbai, Bengaluru and the rest enjoy needling at Converge. In Delhi itself, NIFT is constantly compared with private design schools, and NIFTians usually answer with one word: entrance odds.

What NIFT Delhi is talking about now

Sustainability and craft revival are the dominant themes in studios, with handloom and heritage textiles feeding into graduation collections. Students' Instagram pages double as portfolios long before placements, and AI tools for moodboards and prints are part of the conversation, still debated in juries.
