The story of IIM Ahmedabad
IIM Ahmedabad was established on 11 December 1961 with the backing of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and Indian industry, and with active support from Harvard Business School. Physicist Vikram Sarabhai and industrialist Kasturbhai Lalbhai drove its founding, and Ravi J. Matthai became the first full-time director. Harvard's influence is why the case method still shapes nearly every classroom.
The founders brought in American architect Louis Kahn, and his campus of exposed red brick, giant circles and arches became one of the most photographed pieces of modern architecture in India. Later additions by Bimal Patel's practice in exposed concrete form the new campus, linked to the heritage side by an underpass.
In December 2020 the institute announced it would demolish 14 of the 18 original Kahn dormitories as unsafe, then withdrew the plan in 2021 after protests from architects, alumni and Kahn's children. In late 2022 it settled on rebuilding with the same exterior facade, while Dorm D15 continued as a restoration. In September 2025 IIMA opened its first international campus in Dubai, inaugurated by Dubai's Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed.
What the campus is like socially
Life at IIMA is organised around dorms. Around 740 students live across 27 dormitories, and the dorm you land in becomes your first friend group, your quiz team and your rival in water fights. Each dorm has a Dorm Baap, a student who takes charge of roughly 40 residents for the year. First-years, called fachchas, spend term one buried in assignments, surprise quizzes and summer-placement prep, and the bonding happens in late-night corridor sessions.
The campus has its own dictionary. Arbit means arbitrary, Globe is confident-sounding talk with no logic behind it, CorpoD is the Corporate Dinner in formals before people head off to jobs, and the Blackbook is the inherited archive of past papers and case notes that seniors call the life and soul of every student. With more than 50 student clubs and committees, almost everyone ends up running something.

- Chaos: The cultural fest. Chaos 2026, themed Hues of Heritage, ran 16 to 18 January with Ritviz, Raftaar, Javed Ali and the Sufi band Munaf Luhar, and drew over 1,000 participants to informal events.
- Dunking: Inter-dorm water warfare with water balloons and buckets, one of the oldest bonding rituals on campus.
- Convocation at Louis Kahn Plaza: Convocation is held on Louis Kahn Plaza, and the Harvard Steps serve as the campus's grand main entrance.
- CorpoD: Short for Corporate Dinner: batchmates dress formally and dine out together before stepping into corporate life.
- Bumps: The birthday tradition where friends give the birthday person a round of bumps.
