NID Ahmedabad is India's first design school, founded in 1961 on the back of Charles and Ray Eames' India Report, on a Paldi campus where studios sit above open workshops. It admits through the two-stage NID-DAT, with an acceptance rate of around 1 percent.

The story of NID Ahmedabad

After the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1956, the Government of India invited Charles and Ray Eames to recommend how design could serve the country. Their 1958 India Report, sponsored by the Ford Foundation, called for a design institute, and NID opened in Ahmedabad in 1961.

Gautam and Gira Sarabhai were central to the founding. They argued that Ahmedabad, not Bengaluru or Fatehpur Sikri, was the right home, and shaped a campus with a Bauhaus aesthetic. Seth Chinubhai Chimanlal offered the Paldi land for one rupee, and before it was ready NID worked out of the Sarabhais' Calico Mills complex and Le Corbusier's Sanskar Kendra. Dashrath Patel was founder-secretary until 1981.

NID added a postgraduate campus in Gandhinagar in 2004 and a Bengaluru campus in 2006. The National Institute of Design Act, 2014 made it an Institute of National Importance, and newer NIDs have since opened in other states.

What the campus is like socially

NID runs on learning by doing. Studios, wood, metal, ceramics and photography workshops are open long hours, and the real exams are crits and juries, where you defend your work before faculty and peers. Students joke that the stilted, glass-walled buildings were built so everyone can watch you work.

There is no giant cultural fest in the engineering-college sense. The Students Activity Committee runs sports, cultural events and the canteen, and much of the social life grows out of the studios themselves. Disciplines carry their own identities, and the friendly arguments over whose work is real design never end.

• Crits and juries: Open critiques where faculty and peers dissect your work. They are the defining NID experience.
• Alpavirama: NID's international youth film festival, one of the institute's best-known public events.
• Graduation project: The final-year project, often done with a real client, that decides most portfolios.
• Convocation: NID's formal degree ceremony; the 44th was held in February 2025.

• The one-rupee land: Seth Chinubhai Chimanlal gave the Paldi land to NID for a single rupee.
• The Frutiger logo: Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger designed NID's logo in the 1960s.
• Famous visitors: Frei Otto, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg and Louis Kahn all passed through the early campus, along with the Eameses.
• The lota: The Eames Report held up the humble Indian water pot as a model of good design, and the lota still comes up in studio debates.

Careers, internships and placements

NID graduates go into product and industrial design, UX and interaction design, branding, textiles, animation and film. There is no IIM-style single placement drive, and many graduates freelance, set up studios or study abroad.

Recruiters weigh the portfolio and the graduation project above everything else. Communication design graduates increasingly move into tech and product roles, while industrial and textile designers go to manufacturers, fashion houses and craft-led ventures.

• Dayanita Singh: Photographer who studied visual communication at NID; her first book followed tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, and she won the Hasselblad Award in 2022.
• Orijit Sen: Artist who studied at NID in the 1980s and made River of Stories (1994), considered India's first graphic novel; he co-founded People Tree.
• Pan Nalin: Filmmaker behind Samsara and The Last Film Show, India's official Oscar entry for 2023, who ran the Film Club as an NID student.
• Sujata Keshavan: Graphic designer, NID 1984 and Yale MFA, who co-founded Ray + Keshavan and built identities for companies like Infosys.
• Rahul Mishra: Fashion designer and NID alumnus who won the International Woolmark Prize.
• Ishu Patel: Animator who joined NID's first faculty-trainee cohort and later earned two Oscar nominations at the National Film Board of Canada.

Rivalries and eternal debates

The eternal debate is NID versus NIFT: NID's broader product and communication design against NIFT's fashion and apparel focus. NID versus IIT Bombay's IDC is the other big argument for anyone choosing between NID-DAT and UCEED. Inside NID, disciplines rib each other endlessly, and newer NID campuses push back on Ahmedabad being called the main campus.
