Campus life
Life at an IIT
Life at an IIT runs on your hostel, your fests and your clubs far more than your branch. There are 23 IITs, one entrance funnel, and a campus culture that feels surprisingly similar from Powai to Palakkad.
How the IIT system works
The Indian Institutes of Technology are 23 autonomous engineering institutes bound together by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which makes each one an Institute of National Importance. Each IIT writes its own curriculum and answers to Parliament, not to an affiliating university.
Entry is one funnel. You sit JEE Main, qualify for JEE Advanced, then take your rank into JoSAA counselling, where seats across all 23 IITs are allotted in rounds. For 2026, JoSAA listed 18,826 IIT seats, up from 18,160 the year before, with most of the growth in computer science, AI and newer campuses.
The system grew in waves. Kharagpur opened first, in 1951. Bombay, Madras, Kanpur and Delhi followed by the early 1960s. Guwahati came in 1994, Roorkee converted in 2001, and two expansion rounds in 2008-09 and 2015-16 took the count to 23. IIT Delhi and IIT Madras now also run campuses abroad, in Abu Dhabi and Zanzibar.
Culture: hostels first, branch second
Ask an IITian who their people are and they will usually name a hostel, not a department. Hostels are the real social unit. They compete all year in the General Championship, a points war across sports, culture and tech, and the rivalry is loud, petty and deeply bonding.
The first year has its own rhythm. Freshers go through a supervised orientation program, get assigned mentors from senior batches, and spend two semesters quietly chasing CPI, because a strong first-year score can unlock a branch change. Campus slang arrives fast: insti for the institute, PoR for any position of responsibility, mugging for cramming, GC for the championship.
Gender ratios have historically been skewed. Supernumerary seats for women, added from 2018, have raised female enrollment, but most campuses still have far more men than women. It shapes the social scene, and it is worth knowing before you arrive.
Fests and societies
Every IIT runs on two fest poles, one cultural and one technical. IIT Bombay has Mood Indigo and Techfest, IIT Delhi has Rendezvous and Tryst, IIT Madras has Saarang and Shaastra, IIT Kharagpur has Spring Fest and Kshitij, IIT Kanpur has Antaragni and Techkriti, IIT Roorkee has Thomso and Cognizance, and IIT Guwahati has Alcheringa and Techniche. Organizing teams run into the hundreds, and joining one is the fastest way to meet seniors.
Student life is governed through a Gymkhana or student affairs council, with elected secretaries for culture, sports, tech and hostel affairs. Under that sits a dense layer of clubs: robotics, coding, quant and finance, dramatics, music, debating, quizzing, photography, entrepreneurship cells and Model UN. The annual Inter-IIT Sports Meet and Inter-IIT Cultural Meet turn campus pride into a scored competition.
How IIT students actually make friends
Your first circle is your wing, the corridor of rooms you share in a hostel. Most lifelong IIT friendships start with late-night maggi and borrowed lab notes there. Your second circle comes from the first club or fest team you commit to in the opening months, because those teams meet every week and work under pressure together.
The common mistake is staying inside your branch and your wing for four years. The students who build wider networks say yes to an inter-hostel event, a cross-department project or a fest core team early. Small campuses make this easier; the newer IITs have batches small enough that most people know each other by second year.
If you are not a natural club person, pick one interest and go deep. A running group, a quiz club or a music jam is enough to find people who are not just your classmates.
Careers in broad strokes
Placement season starts in December with Day 1, when the highest-paying recruiters come first, and many students already hold pre-placement offers from summer internships. Software, quant trading, consulting, finance and product roles dominate. Core engineering hiring is smaller but real, and a steady share of graduates go for higher studies, civil services or the IIT-to-IIM route.
The alumni network is the long game. IIT graduates founded or run a long list of companies in India and Silicon Valley, and alumni associations at every campus run mentorship and reunions that keep that network active.
Your first semester, honestly
The first semester is a shock for most people. Everyone was a topper at school, and suddenly you are in the middle of a class curve. Relative grading, a heavy lab load and a hostel full of distractions make the first few months harder than JEE prep for some students.
The workload is real, and so is the pressure. Every IIT now runs a student wellness center or counselling service, and peer mentors from senior batches are assigned to help freshers settle in. Using them early is normal, not a sign of weakness.
A simple rule many seniors repeat: protect sleep, attend the first few weeks of every course, and do not sign up for ten clubs. One club, one sport and one friend group outside your wing is plenty for semester one.
Where Zyber fits
Campus groups on WhatsApp get noisy fast, and it is hard to tell who shares your interest beyond your hostel. Zyber is a social app for meeting verified people nearby, so you can find someone for a run, a hackathon team or a study session on your own campus or in your city, and message them directly.

FAQ: Life at an IIT
How many IITs are there in India?+
There are 23 IITs in India in 2026. Together they offered 18,826 seats through JoSAA counselling in 2026.
What is life at IIT like?+
Life at an IIT is hostel-centric and busy: classes and labs by day, clubs, fest work and inter-hostel competitions by night. Most students say their hostel and their first club shape their social life more than their branch does.
Which is the oldest IIT?+
IIT Kharagpur is the oldest IIT. It opened in 1951 in West Bengal.
Is it hard to make friends at IIT?+
Not if you join something early. Your hostel wing gives you a first circle, and one club or fest team in the first semester usually gives you a second.
What is the General Championship at IIT?+
The General Championship, or GC, is a year-long competition between hostels across sports, cultural and technical events. It is one of the biggest drivers of hostel identity on most IIT campuses.
Do IITs have campuses outside India?+
Yes. IIT Madras runs a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and IIT Delhi runs one in Abu Dhabi.
