Campus life

Life at NIFT

Life at NIFT revolves around the studio: juries, late-night submissions and a final graduation show your batch builds from scratch. Outside the studio, clubs, a campus fest and the inter-campus Converge meet fill the year.

How the NIFT system works

The National Institute of Fashion Technology was set up in 1986 in Delhi, with technical support from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. It became a statutory, degree-granting institute under the NIFT Act in 2006 and sits under the Ministry of Textiles.

Legally it is one institute with 20 campuses, from Delhi and Mumbai to Kannur, Srinagar, Shillong, Daman, Varanasi and Nava Raipur. All of them share one entrance exam, one curriculum framework and one degree.

Entry runs through the NIFT entrance, conducted by NTA. B.Des applicants take a General Ability Test and a Creative Ability Test, then a hands-on Situation Test where you build a model from a one-line brief. B.FTech applicants take a different route without the creative rounds.

Culture: studios, crits and all-nighters

NIFT runs on crit culture more than exam culture. Projects are reviewed in juries, and the weeks before a submission are famous for all-nighters, borrowed tools and shared fabric. You will spend more time in the studio with your department than anywhere else.

The departments have their own personalities: fashion design, textile, knitwear, leather, accessory design, fashion communication and fashion technology. Craft documentation and industry visits pull you off campus regularly.

The final-year graduation show is the big rite. Students design and produce full collections and help run the show itself, from sponsors to models to venue.

Clubs and fests

Every campus runs the same set of Student Development Activity Clubs: cultural, literary, film and photography, social and environmental, and sports. Club activities have a protected slot on Wednesday evenings across the system, which makes them easy to commit to.

Each campus also runs its own annual fest. NIFT Delhi's Spectrum is one of the best known. Converge, the inter-campus meet, brings teams from different NIFT campuses together for sports, cultural and literary events, so you meet Niftians from across the country.

How NIFT students actually make friends

Your department is your first circle, because you share the studio for years. Group projects and late submissions turn classmates into friends quickly.

Clubs are the easiest way to meet people from other departments, especially film and photography or cultural clubs that need help for every event. Hostel situations vary by campus, so at some campuses your PG neighbors or commute group become part of your circle too.

The fashion industry is small, and the network starts in college. Assisting on a senior's graduation show is one of the best ways to meet people a year or two ahead of you.

Careers in broad strokes

Graduates go into retail and brands, export houses, design studios, merchandising, styling, fashion media and their own labels. Many start by assisting at an established studio, and a large share of working Indian designers studied at NIFT.

Early pay is modest compared with engineering and MBA tracks and varies by campus and course. The network, which compounds over time, is the real asset.

A typical week at NIFT

A normal week mixes theory classes, long studio hours and a jury or review somewhere in the middle. First year is a common foundation program before you move into your department, so you meet students from every discipline in your batch at the start.

Materials are a constant topic: where to buy fabric, which market has the best trims, who has a working sewing machine before a deadline. Markets like Shanti Mohalla and Lajpat Nagar in Delhi, or Dadar in Mumbai, become familiar quickly.

Craft and industry exposure is built in. Students visit craft clusters, document techniques and later do internships with brands or export houses. These trips are often where friendships across sections form.

NIFT lingo and rituals

Niftians talk about juries, crits, swatches, spec sheets and toiles the way engineering students talk about labs and quizzes. Everyone has a Situation Test story from the entrance, and comparing them is a classic first-week icebreaker.

Graduation show season is the emotional peak of the year. Juniors volunteer backstage, alumni come back to watch, and industry guests attend. Even if you are in first year, helping out is the fastest way to understand what the next four years build toward.

Converge, the inter-campus meet, runs in zonal rounds before a national round. It is the one time students from campuses as far apart as Kannur and Kangra end up on the same sports field or stage.

Where Zyber fits

Creative work goes better with collaborators: a photographer for your lookbook, a model for a shoot, a stylist for a project. Zyber is a social app for meeting verified people nearby, so you can find them on your campus or in your city and message them directly.
