Campus life

Life at Symbiosis

Life at Symbiosis depends on which institute you join. SIBM, SLS, SIMC, SCMS and the rest each run their own culture, but they share a Pune-rooted brand, a busy fest calendar and an unusually international student mix.

How the Symbiosis system works

Symbiosis was founded in 1971 in Pune by Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, then a botany professor, initially to support international students living in the city. Symbiosis International (Deemed University) now runs a long list of constituent institutes across management, law, media, design, engineering, computer studies, health sciences, liberal arts and more.

The hub is Pune, split mainly between the Lavale hilltop campus and the Viman Nagar cluster. SIU also runs campuses in Nashik, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Noida and Nagpur.

Admission runs through two main gateways. The Symbiosis Entrance Test, SET, covers undergraduate programs, with SLAT for law. SNAP covers MBA and postgraduate management programs across the Symbiosis B-schools.

Culture: one brand, many institutes

Saying you study at Symbiosis tells people very little until you name the institute. Each one has its own director, its own student council and committees, its own placement cell and its own personality. A law student at SLS Pune and an MBA student at SIBM may share a hilltop but lead quite different lives.

The international thread is real. Symbiosis has hosted students from many countries for decades, and international student events are part of the calendar. Pune itself, with its large student population and cafe culture, shapes life outside class.

Fests and committees

Fest culture is institute-owned. Sympulse, run by the Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies in Pune, is a multi-day intercollegiate fest that also hosts SIMUNC, a Model UN conference. SIBM Pune runs Transcend, SLS Pune runs Symbhav, and SIMC runs a student film festival.

Below the fests sit the usual committees: placement and corporate relations, cultural, sports, media and editorial, plus moot court societies at the law schools and case competition clubs at the B-schools. Committee selections can be competitive, with interviews in the first weeks.

How Symbiosis students actually make friends

Your batch and your hostel or PG are the first circles. Many institutes have small batches, so classmates become friends quickly through group projects and presentations.

Committees and fest teams are the fastest way to meet seniors and students from other programs at your institute. Because institutes are separate, meeting people from other Symbiosis schools takes more effort, and intercollegiate events like Sympulse or SIMUNC are a good bridge.

Pune's student neighborhoods, from Viman Nagar to the areas around the Senapati Bapat Road campuses, have a large student population, which makes it easy to find people beyond your own institute.

The honest part

Fees are a recurring debate, especially for the flagship MBA programs. Quality and outcomes also vary across institutes and campuses, so compare the specific institute and campus, not just the Symbiosis name.

Lavale and some satellite campuses are some distance from the city center, which affects how often you get out. Factor in commute and transport when choosing where to live.

Careers in broad strokes

Careers follow the institute. SIBM Pune and SCMHRD send MBA graduates into banking and finance, consulting, FMCG and tech. Symbiosis Law Schools feed litigation, corporate firms and in-house roles. SIMC and SCMC send graduates into journalism, advertising and media.

The alumni base is large by volume and spread across business, media, law and entertainment rather than concentrated in one industry.

Living in Pune as a Symbiosis student

Pune is one of India's biggest student cities, and that shapes Symbiosis life. Cafes, weekend treks to the Sahyadri forts, monsoon trips to Lonavala and late-night food in Koregaon Park or FC Road are part of the routine.

Hostel capacity differs by institute, so many students live in PGs or shared flats. Where you live affects your social life: Viman Nagar is close to several institutes and nightlife, while the Lavale hilltop campus is greener and quieter but further from the city.

Satellite campuses in Nagpur, Nashik, Noida, Bengaluru and Hyderabad have their own city cultures and smaller student communities, which many students say makes it easier to know people across programs.

Inside the B-schools, the friendly SIBM vs SCMHRD debate is a running theme, argued over placements, campus life and culture, with plenty of forum threads and no final winner. The law schools have their own version across the four SLS campuses, with Pune as the original.
