The story of Symbiosis International University Pune

Symbiosis started in 1971 with a practical problem. Prof. S.B. Mujumdar, who headed the botany department at Fergusson College, saw that foreign students in Pune had little support, and set up the Symbiosis International Cultural Centre to bring Indian and international students together. Its motto, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, means the world is one family.

Institutes followed quickly: Symbiosis Law School in 1977 and the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management in 1978. In 2002 the government granted deemed university status, and the Society's colleges became Symbiosis International University. SIBM moved to a new residential campus at Lavale on Pune's western edge in 2008.

Today Symbiosis runs campuses in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Noida, plus an international campus in Dubai. Mujumdar received the Padma Bhushan in 2012, and the university is accredited A++ by NAAC.
