The story of FLAME University
FLAME began in 2004 as the Foundation for Liberal and Management Education, with entrepreneur Parag Shah as its founder and chairman. Its first undergraduate batch of about 115 students arrived in 2007, and the goal was to bring a broad, choose-your-path liberal education model to Indian undergraduates.
The Maharashtra legislature passed the FLAME University Act in 2014, and FLAME became a state private university in 2015. The campus was designed by Vastu Shilpa Consultants, the firm founded by Pritzker-winning architect B. V. Doshi.
Today FLAME runs five schools: Liberal Education, Business, Communication, Computing and Data Sciences, and Design, Art and Performance. Dr. Dishan Kamdar is Vice-Chancellor.
What the campus is like socially
FLAME is a campus bubble in the best and most self-aware sense. Students live, study and socialise on the same hillside, and every student belongs to one of four houses that compete through the year, so house loyalty becomes a big part of identity.
