Meeting people at Fergusson College
Fergusson College is a 65-acre heritage campus on FC Road in Shivajinagar, Pune, founded in 1885 by Tilak, Agarkar and their colleagues, and it counts two Prime Ministers among its alumni. Students come for the history, the green campus and FC Road just outside the gate.
Fergusson's 65-acre FC Road campus runs its own cluster of departmental fests each winter, Wallstreet for Economics, Antiquarians for History, Tattva for Philosophy, Words'Worth for English, alongside the separate Fergusson International Short Film Festival run by its Media and Communication department since 2019.
The story of Fergusson College
Fergusson College was founded in 1885 by the Deccan Education Society, set up by Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi and Vaman Shivram Apte. Their goal was to build a first-rate college run entirely by Indians, with teachers who committed to modest pay so the institution could grow. It was named after Sir James Fergusson, then Governor of Bombay.
The college began on 37 acres leased in 1885 and grew to today's 65 acres. Landmarks went up over the following decades: the Victorian Main Building, the Amphitheatre, which crossed 100 years in 2012, and the Bai Jerbai Wadia Library, opened in 1929 and home to more than 300,000 books.
In 2015 the UGC named Fergusson a heritage institution, and in May 2018 it was upgraded to university status. It still runs as an autonomous college under the Deccan Education Society, and NIRF 2024 ranked it 45th among Indian colleges.
What the campus is like socially
Fergusson feels like a big, leafy town square for Pune's students. The campus backs onto a forested hill, so morning walkers, birders and students share the same paths, and long walks between departments are part of the deal. The national anthem plays across campus at 7 am and again at 6 pm, and everyone stops where they are.
Social life spills straight out of the gate onto FC Road, the street named after the college, with its cafes, street food and shopping. Inside, Kimaya, the open-air theatre, is the default spot for rehearsals, gossip and skipped lectures, and a sizeable international student community makes the crowd more mixed than most Indian colleges.
Traditions every Fergussonian knows
- Anthem at 7 and 6: The national anthem is broadcast across campus every morning at 7 am and every evening at 6 pm, and the whole campus freezes for it.
- Departmental fests: Instead of one mega-fest, departments run their own events through the year, from economics to psychology to history, and compete for footfall.
- Kimaya hangouts: The open-air theatre hosts performances and events, and between them it is where Fergussonians sit, talk and plan.
- FC Road after class: The walk out of the gate onto FC Road for chai, snacks and shopping is a daily ritual for most students.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Fergusson in the movies: The Oscar-winning Gandhi, the 1984 Aamir Khan film Holi and The Legend of Bhagat Singh were all shot on campus.
- The pigeons of the Amphitheatre: The century-old Amphitheatre has been renovated, but students joke that the upper levels still belong to the pigeons.
- Tekdi behind campus: The hill behind the college is a favourite for birdwatching, nature photography and sunrise walks.
- Two Prime Ministers, one gate: P. V. Narasimha Rao and V. P. Singh both studied here, a fact every senior tells every fresher.

Rivalries and eternal debates
In Pune, the classic question for every arts and science aspirant is Fergusson or S.P. College, two heritage campuses with loyal alumni. Then there is the half-joking comparison with nearby engineering colleges like COEP: Fergussonians like to say their college makes leaders, while engineers point to their placement packages.
