French Jesuit Fr. Francis Bertram and fellow Jesuits opened Loyola College on 7 July 1925 with 75 students across three undergraduate programmes. It was set up as a Catholic minority institution offering university education to deserving students regardless of caste or creed, and it took its motto from Latin: Luceat Lux Vestra, let your light shine.
Loyola became autonomous in 1978, which lets it frame its own courses and exams while the University of Madras awards the degrees.
