Mount Carmel's roots are in Kerala. The Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa were founded on 24 April 1887 in Ernakulam by Mother Teresa of St Rose of Lima, and the congregation opened Mount Carmel College on Palace Road, Bangalore, in 1948.
For more than 75 years it was one of Bengaluru's best-known women's colleges. Men were first admitted to postgraduate courses in 2021, and in 2024 the institution became fully co-educational, undergraduate courses included.
On 25 June 2026 Mount Carmel received deemed-to-be-university status, capping a long run as an autonomous college. It now offers undergraduate programmes across commerce, arts, science, business and computer applications, plus postgraduate, MBA, MCA and diploma courses.
