Campus life
Life at BITS
Life at BITS is defined by freedom: flexible attendance, a self-paced academic system and a campus culture run largely by students. Each campus has its own fests and personality, but the BITSian identity travels.
How the BITS system works
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science became a deemed university in 1964, growing out of Birla-run colleges in Pilani, Rajasthan. It added campuses in Dubai in 2000, Goa in 2004 and Hyderabad in 2008, and opened a Mumbai campus for management, law and design in 2024.
Admission to the Indian engineering campuses runs through BITSAT, a computer-based test, and BITS is known for admitting purely on merit, without caste-based reservation. Fees are higher than at government institutes, which is a common part of the decision for families.
Academics follow a semester system with continuous evaluation and letter grades. A dual-degree option lets some students combine a B.E. with an M.Sc. over five years.
Culture: freedom and Practice School
BITS is famous for not enforcing a minimum attendance requirement in most courses. That freedom shapes the culture: you are trusted to manage your own time, and the students who thrive learn to self-direct early.
Practice School is the other signature. Students spend time working inside companies as part of the degree, with a shorter stint after second year and a longer one later in the program. It is an early, real look at the working world, and many students convert it into a job offer.
Pilani's remote desert setting gives it a tight, insular campus culture and fierce alumni nostalgia. Goa trades on its beach-state setting, Hyderabad on being close to a major tech city, and Dubai runs on its own admission track.
Fests and clubs
Every campus has a fest trilogy of sorts. Pilani runs Oasis for culture, APOGEE for tech and BOSM for sports, one of the largest student-run sports meets in India. Goa runs Waves for culture and Quark for tech, and Hyderabad runs Pearl for culture and ATMOS for tech.
Fests are run almost entirely by students, with departments for sponsorship, publicity, logistics and events. Joining a fest department in first year is the fastest way into campus life. Beyond fests, each campus has dance, music, dramatics, quizzing, coding, robotics, entrepreneurship and photography clubs, plus regional associations that help freshers from the same state settle in.
How BITS students actually make friends
Your hostel wing is your first circle. BITS hostels, called bhawans at Pilani, are where most first-year friendships begin, over mess food and late-night conversations.
Clubs and fest departments are the second circle. Because attendance is flexible, the people you see every day are often your club people rather than your classmates. Regional associations are another easy way in, especially if you are far from home.
Practice School stints also mix things up, since you work alongside BITSians from other branches and sometimes other campuses.
The honest part
Freedom cuts both ways. Without attendance rules, it is easy to drift in first year and fall behind on continuous evaluation. Seniors usually advise attending regularly for the first semester until you know your own rhythm.
Gender ratios have historically been skewed at BITS, as at most Indian engineering campuses, and hostel rules for women were debated for years. A student-led campaign helped end the women's hostel curfew at Pilani in 2016, an example of the student body shaping policy.
Careers in broad strokes
Software, finance, analytics, electronics and consulting roles dominate placements, with Practice School conversions playing a big role. A strong share of graduates go abroad for higher studies.
The alumni network is one of the most active in India, with BITSian founders, executives and investors across Silicon Valley and the Indian startup ecosystem. Alumni associations run mentorship and angel networks for student founders.
BITS lingo and rituals
Every campus has its own slang, and Pilani's is the most elaborate. Freshers learn the names of bhawans, the mess, the late-night food joints and the shortcuts around campus within the first week. Regional associations host festivals from home states, which gives first-years far from home an easy welcome.
Fest season dominates the calendar. Oasis and APOGEE at Pilani, Waves and Quark at Goa, and Pearl and ATMOS at Hyderabad take months of student planning, and each has a long list of past performers and speakers that students quote with pride. BOSM, the Pilani sports fest, brings athletes from colleges across India.
The dual-degree and Practice School structure means batches mix more than at most colleges. You may finish your degree alongside people who started a year before or after you, which widens your circle naturally.
