IIT Hyderabad's social year runs on two events: Elan and nVision, the January techno-cultural fest that brings in thousands of outside students, and Milan, the inter-hostel championship every September where around 5,000 students compete for their block.

The story of IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad opened in 2008 as one of the new IITs, and its first classes ran out of a temporary campus at the Ordnance Factory, now Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, in Yeddumailaram. Founding director Prof. U.B. Desai built the institute there for its first seven years.

The Government of Japan provided technical and financial support for setting up the institute, and that link still shows in IITH's research and industry partnerships with Japanese organisations.

In July 2015 the institute moved to its permanent campus at Kandi in Sangareddy district, about 576 acres off the Mumbai highway. Academic buildings were designed by the Delhi firm ARCOP, while the hostels, lecture halls and several departments were designed by architect Christopher Charles Benninger, with an emphasis on energy-efficient design.

What the campus is like socially

Kandi is outside the city, so IITH is a campus where life happens within walking distance: classes, two big messes, food outlets in the hostel zone, sports grounds and club rooms. Hyderabad trips are a weekend plan rather than a daily habit, which pushes students to build their social life on campus.

Hostel identity matters here. Blocks compete in Milan every September across sports, culture and tech, and the run-up to the championship is when many first-years find their people. Clubs under the Students' Gymkhana, from VIBES for music to Rang De Manch for theatre, fill the evenings the rest of the year.

• Elan and nVision: The annual techno-cultural fest, held in January or February. Elan (culture) and nVision (tech) have run together since 2016, with concerts, competitions, hackathons and exhibitions.
• Milan: The general championship between hostels, held over about ten days in September, with sports, cultural and tech events and around 5,000 student participants.
• Diesta: An inter-departmental competition, the third of IITH's big yearly events after Elan and Milan.
• Abhyanth: IITH's sports fest, with track and field, outdoor and indoor sports, and evening pronites.
• E-Summit: The entrepreneurship summit run by E-Cell, bringing founders and investors to campus to talk with students.

Campus lore and insider spots

• Started in an ordnance factory: For its first seven years, IITH ran from a temporary campus at the ordnance factory in Yeddumailaram. Starting an IIT inside a factory complex is the closest thing it has to a founding legend.
• Hostels named after Indian scholars: Hostels carry names like Aryabhatta, Susruta, Kautilya, Gargi, Maitreyi and Ramanujan, so a hostel name doubles as a history lesson.
• The Benninger buildings: The distinctive hostels and lecture halls designed by architect Christopher Charles Benninger give the campus its look, and are a favourite backdrop for photos.
• The Japan connection: IITH was set up with support from the Government of Japan, and Japan-linked research and exchange programmes are still part of campus life.

IITH runs a central placement season with recruiters across software, semiconductors, finance, consulting and core engineering. Computer science and electrical engineering see the most interest, and the institute's growing focus on chip design has made semiconductor firms a visible part of the recruiter list.

Entrepreneurship is a real track here, with E-Cell and the institute's incubator supporting student startups. Research links with industry, including Japanese companies, give students another route into internships and research roles.

Rivalries and eternal debates

Being founded in 2008, IITH gets compared with every other new IIT, and JEE forums never stop debating a branch at IITH against a lower branch at an older IIT. In the city, the friendly three-way comparison is IIT Hyderabad versus IIIT Hyderabad versus BITS Hyderabad. On campus, the fiercest rivalry is between hostel blocks during Milan.
