IIT Jodhpur's 852-acre campus in the Thar Desert won a GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award in 2017 for passive architecture design built to stay cool without leaning on air conditioning.

The story of IIT Jodhpur

IIT Jodhpur began in 2008, first planned as IIT Rajasthan. With no campus ready, its first 109 undergraduates in computer science, mechanical and electrical engineering started classes at IIT Kanpur, its mentor institute.

In May 2010 the institute moved to a transit campus at MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur city. Union HRD Minister M.M. Pallam Raju laid the foundation stone of the permanent campus on 16 April 2013, and the move to the 852-acre site off NH-62 was completed in July 2017.

The campus master plan, designed for desert heat, won a GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award for passive architecture in 2017. The institute has since added a School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, a management school and a School of Design.

What the campus is like socially

Life at IITJ is shaped by the desert. The campus is far from the city, summers are fierce and evenings are when the place comes alive, with hostel courtyards, sports grounds and club rooms full after sunset. Weekend trips to Jodhpur's old city, Mehrangarh Fort and the markets are a favourite escape.

The Students' Gymkhana runs seven societies covering culture and literature, design and arts, sports, science and technology, academics and careers, and campus life. Because the campus is young, students still get to start clubs and traditions of their own, and fest teams for Ignus and Prometeo are a big part of first-year friendships.

Traditions every IIT Jodhpur student knows

  • Ignus: IIT Jodhpur's techno-cultural fest, usually held in February, with concerts, dance, drama, music, literary and art events. It is one of the biggest college fests in Rajasthan.
  • Prometeo: The technical and entrepreneurship fest, with robotics, hackathons, business events and speaker sessions.
  • Varchas: The annual sports week, with teams from colleges across India competing on IITJ's grounds.
  • Virasaat: The SPIC MACAY festival on campus, bringing Indian classical music and dance to the desert.
  • Framed: The Design and Arts Society's flagship event, showing artwork from IITJ students and nearby colleges.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Three campuses in a decade: IITJ's earliest students began at IIT Kanpur, moved to a transit campus at MBM Engineering College, and only later reached the desert campus in 2017.
  • Built for the heat: The campus design focuses on passive cooling, shading and courtyards, which earned it a national green building award.
  • The Blue City nearby: Jodhpur's blue-painted old city and Mehrangarh Fort are the classic weekend trip, though they are farther from campus than outsiders assume.
  • Once IIT Rajasthan: Before Jodhpur was chosen as the site, the institute was known as IIT Rajasthan.

Careers, internships and placements

IITJ runs a central placement process with recruiters from software, data and AI, finance and core engineering. Computer science and the AI and data science programmes draw the most interest, reflecting the institute's early bet on the field.

The institute's collaborations with AIIMS Jodhpur on medical technology and its management and design schools give students more options than a pure engineering campus, and E-Cell supports those who want to start companies.

Rivalries and eternal debates

IITJ is benchmarked against the other 2008 IITs, and JEE forums never stop debating whether its AI and data science focus outweighs an older brand elsewhere. Students joke about being the IIT in the middle of nowhere, then win the argument with desert sunsets. Inter-IIT sports results carry big bragging rights.
