Meeting people at IIT Ropar

Last updated: October 2026

IIT Ropar is Punjab's IIT, a 525-acre campus on the bank of the Sutlej in Rupnagar, and its year is built around three student-run fests: Zeitgeist for culture in October, Advitiya for tech and Aarohan for sport.

Area:Rupnagar (Ropar), Punjab, on the bank of the Sutlej, about 45 km from Chandigarh
Founded:2008
Size:small (525-acre residential campus)
Affiliation:Institute of National Importance
Campus:525 acres, Rupnagar, on the Sutlej
Known as:IIT Ropar, or IIT RPR

IIT Ropar's entrance is marked by four 41-foot stone-carved pillars inspired by the Indus Valley civilisation, made in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India.

The story of IIT Ropar

IIT Ropar was set up in 2008 as one of the new IITs. For its first academic year it had no campus at all, and the founding batch studied at IIT Delhi. On 1 August 2009 the institute moved to a transit campus in Rupnagar town.

Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus on 24 February 2009. The site, former Birla Seed Farms land on the bank of the Sutlej, took years to build, and the institute moved there in June 2018.

Today IIT Ropar has eleven departments, from computer science and electrical engineering to biomedical engineering and humanities, plus a School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering.

What the campus is like socially

Ropar is a small town, and the campus is a self-contained world of hostels, academic blocks, sports grounds and open fields by the river. Chandigarh is about an hour away, which makes it the classic weekend escape for food, cafes and shopping.

With a relatively small student body, it is easy to know people across years. Hostel festivals like Diwali and Garba nights are many freshers' first big social moment, and the clubs under the cultural and technical boards are where most students find their group before fest season takes over.

Traditions every IIT Ropar student knows

  • Zeitgeist: IIT Ropar's three-day cultural fest, held in October or November, with music, dance, drama and a new theme each year, drawing students from colleges across North India.
  • Advitiya: The technical fest held in February or March, first held in 2017, with technical competitions, quizzes, gaming contests, talks and a star night.
  • Aarohan: The sports fest, established in 2016, bringing athletes from colleges across North India for three days of competition.
  • Hostel festivals: Diwali and Garba nights in the hostels are the first big celebrations most freshers experience.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • The Indus Valley gate: Four 41-foot stone pillars carved with Indus Valley motifs stand at the entrance, and nearly every fresher's first campus photo is taken there.
  • The IIT Delhi year: IIT Ropar's very first batch studied at IIT Delhi, since the Ropar campus did not exist yet.
  • Transit campus memories: Seniors who began at the cramped transit campus in Rupnagar town love reminding juniors how good they have it on the river campus.
  • Seed farm to campus: The campus stands on land that was once Birla Seed Farms, beside the Sutlej.

Careers, internships and placements

IIT Ropar runs a central placement process with recruiters across software, data, finance and core engineering. Computer science and electrical engineering draw the most recruiter interest.

The institute has a strong research reputation for its age, so undergraduates interested in research can find faculty projects early. Coding skills, projects and internships are the main ways students stand out.

Rivalries and eternal debates

IIT Ropar is usually compared with IIT Mandi, its neighbour in the hills, and with the other 2008 IITs on JEE forums. Being Punjab's only IIT is a point of pride, and at Inter-IIT meets, results against older IITs count double in campus conversation.
