IIT Bhubaneswar sits on a 936-acre campus at Argul, near Jatni, about 25 km from Bhubaneswar city, so student life happens almost entirely on campus. Its big social moment is Pravaah, the annual fest that now fuses culture, tech and startups into one.

The story of IIT Bhubaneswar

IIT Bhubaneswar was one of the new IITs announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in August 2007, and it was formally set up on 22 July 2008. Classes began the next day at an IIT Kharagpur extension centre in Bhubaneswar city, with IIT Kharagpur acting as mentor. The first director, Prof. M. Chakraborty, joined in May 2009.

The permanent campus came up at Argul village in Khordha district, next to a reserve forest and at the foot of Barunei Hill. Students started moving there from 2015, when the 800-bed Mahanadi Hall opened, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the 936-acre campus on 24 December 2018.

Instead of classic departments, IIT BBS is organised into seven schools, from Electrical and Computer Sciences to Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences. It also made a small piece of history in 2015 by becoming the first IIT to offer Odissi dance as a subject for BTech students.

What the campus is like socially

Argul is a long way from the city's malls and cafes, so the campus is your social world. Friendships form in the halls of residence, in club rooms in the evening and around the run-up to the fest, when half the campus seems to be on an organising team. The flyover linking the academic and residential zones is the spot everyone passes through, and the default meeting point.

Because IIT BBS is a young campus, students are still inventing its traditions. That makes it easier to take on real responsibility early: first and second years often lead clubs, start new events and build things from scratch rather than inheriting decades-old hierarchies. The campus also runs a strict anti-ragging policy, which shapes a fairly relaxed first-year experience.

• Pravaah: The institute's combined cultural and technopreneurship annual fest. Its second edition ran over four days in February 2026, mixing hackathons, robo soccer, a startup expo, a fashion show and a comedy night.
• Alma Fiesta: For more than a decade, this three-day socio-cultural fest was IIT BBS's flagship, usually held in January with music nights, dance and band competitions.
• Wissenaire: The techno-management fest that ran alongside Alma Fiesta, with robotics, design and business-plan events. Its spirit now lives on inside Pravaah.
• Odissi on the timetable: IIT BBS was the first IIT to bring Odissi, Odisha's classical dance, into the BTech curriculum in 2015, a nod to the state the campus calls home.

• Barunei Hill: The hill rising beside campus is home to the Barunei temple and is linked to the Paika rebellion against British rule in 1817. Many students only learn this history well into their degree.
• The flyover: A bridge connecting the academic zone to the residential zone is the campus's main landmark and the default answer to where shall we meet.
• River-named halls: Halls carry river names like Mahanadi and Subarnarekha, and students refer to them by name rather than number.
• Two birthdays: The institute was founded in 2008, but its permanent campus was only inaugurated in December 2018, so IIT BBS effectively has two founding moments a decade apart.

IIT BBS runs a central placement process each year, with software, product, analytics and finance firms hiring alongside core companies in infrastructure, metallurgy and manufacturing, which match the institute's schools. Computer science and electrical branches see the heaviest recruiter interest.

The institute has also pushed hard on startups and research partnerships, including work with defence and space agencies, so students interested in deep tech or building a company have more on-campus support than the IIT's age might suggest. Seniors commonly advise building a second strength, such as a coding record, a research project or a fest leadership role, on top of the IIT tag.

Rivalries and eternal debates

IIT BBS is constantly compared with IIT Hyderabad, its exact contemporary from 2008, and in Odisha the friendly debate is IIT tag versus NIT Rourkela's longer legacy. Like every newer IIT, it also carries a bit of a chip on its shoulder against the original five, which students tend to answer by pointing at their huge green campus.
