Meeting people at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad began in 1926 as the Indian School of Mines and became an IIT in 2016, and student life on its campus in India's coal capital runs on gemstone-named hostels and a fest calendar led by Srijan, Concetto and the alumni reunion Basant.
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was founded as the Indian School of Mines in 1926, modelled on London's Royal School of Mines, and only became an IIT in 2016, so it is older than every IIT yet one of the newest to carry the name.
The story of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
The Indian School of Mines and Applied Geology was set up by the British Indian government on the lines of the Royal School of Mines in London and inaugurated by Lord Irwin on 9 December 1926. India was already a major coal producer, and the school was created to train the mining engineers and geologists the industry badly needed.
It was renamed the Indian School of Mines in 1957, when petroleum engineering was introduced, and received university status from the UGC in 1967. Over the following decades it added electronics, computer science, mechanical, civil, chemical and other branches, while keeping its depth in mining, geology, geophysics and petroleum.
The Union Cabinet approved its conversion into an IIT on 25 May 2016, and it formally became IIT (ISM) Dhanbad that August. Many locals and alumni still simply call it ISM. The institute's centenary falls in 2026.
What the campus is like socially
Dhanbad is the coal capital of India, and the campus feels different from the newer IITs, with older heritage buildings, mining labs and a strong sense of tradition. Hostels are named after gemstones, from Diamond and Ruby to Sapphire and Emerald, and students often introduce themselves by hostel.
Social life is campus-centric. Freshers' nights, inter-hostel sports and the long build-up to Srijan and Concetto bring batches together, and the alumni network is unusually active, with Basant drawing graduates back every year. For a lot of students, a core team role in one of the fests is the defining part of college.
Traditions every ISMite knows
- Srijan: The socio-cultural fest, usually held in February or March, with music, dance, drama, gaming and star nights over three days, drawing students from hundreds of institutions.
- Concetto: The techno-management fest held in October, with technical competitions, case challenges, hackathons and talks.
- Basant: The annual alumni meet, held around Basant Panchami, when graduates return to campus. It is one of ISM's most loved traditions.
- Parakram: The sports fest, bringing teams from other colleges to Dhanbad.
- Khanan: A techno-mining fest that reflects ISM's roots, with events built around mining and earth sciences.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Older than the IITs: ISM was founded in 1926, decades before IIT Kharagpur, which fuels endless jokes about whether it is the oldest or the newest IIT.
- Gemstone hostels: Hostels are named after precious stones like Diamond, Sapphire, Amber, Ruby, Opal, Jasper, Topaz and Emerald.
- Penman Auditorium: The main auditorium is named after the school's first principal, David Penman, and hosts many of the big campus events.
- The coalfield next door: The campus sits near the Jharia coalfield, famous for underground fires that have burned for over a century.

Computer science draws the most recruiter interest, while mining, petroleum and geology students often also look at public sector routes.

Rivalries and eternal debates
The great running joke is the IIT question: ISM is older than any IIT but only got the name in 2016, and students hear about it from all sides. Within Jharkhand, comparisons with BIT Mesra are common among JEE aspirants, and on campus the hostels fight it out in inter-hostel sport.
