Meeting people at IIT Jammu
IIT Jammu's students live at Jagti in Nagrota tehsil, on NH-44 about 6 to 7 km from Jammu city, on a campus set against the Shivalik foothills, where a young, compact student body builds its social life around hostels, clubs and campus events.
IIT Jammu signed a research partnership with the Indian Army's Northern Command in March 2021, and its researchers have since worked on defence technology such as a drone that uses optical fibre instead of radio for communication.
The story of IIT Jammu
IIT Jammu was set up in 2016 through an agreement between the Ministry of Education and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, with IIT Delhi as its mentor institute. The first BTech students started at a temporary campus in Jammu city.
In August 2017 the institute moved its BTech and MTech students to a transit campus at Jagti, which now houses the full student body with hostels for 650 students, digital classrooms and sports facilities. The larger permanent campus is being developed on 159 hectares of state land around it.
Prof. Manoj Singh Gaur has led the institute as director through its growth. IIT Jammu now offers BTech in eight specialisations, along with MTech, an executive MTech in AI and ML, and PhD programmes across nine disciplines.
What the campus is like socially
Jagti is quiet and set back from the city, so campus life is self-contained: hostels close to the academic blocks, a cafeteria, an open gym, music and dance rooms, and courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton. Jammu city is a short drive away for food and markets, and the hills are close for weekend outings.
The student body is small, so people across branches know each other well. Clubs for coding, robotics, literature, photography and more are the main way to meet people, and big campus events like hackathons and convocation bring the whole institute together.

Campus lore and insider spots
- The LCD campus days: Before Jagti, first-year BTech students studied at a temporary campus in Jammu city, which now houses PhD scholars.
- Built with the Army: A 2021 partnership with the Indian Army's Northern Command makes defence research a visible part of campus life.
- The fibre-optic drone: IIT Jammu researchers have worked on a stealth drone that communicates through optical fibre, making it hard to jam or detect.
- Shivalik views: The campus sits against the Shivalik foothills, and the hills are the backdrop to almost every campus photo.
