Campus life

Life at NID

Life at NID is studio life. Your week runs on projects, workshops and juries, your first year sends you out to work with craftspeople, and the people you build things with become your closest friends.

How the NID system works

The National Institute of Design opened in Ahmedabad in 1961, shaped by the India Report that designers Charles and Ray Eames wrote for the Government of India in 1958. It began as a single campus and stayed that way for over forty years.

Today there are seven NID campuses. NID Ahmedabad runs three: the flagship in Ahmedabad, plus postgraduate campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. Four newer sister institutes were set up under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014: NID Andhra Pradesh in Vijayawada, NID Haryana in Kurukshetra, NID Madhya Pradesh in Bhopal and NID Assam in Jorhat.

Admission runs through the Design Aptitude Test, NID DAT, with a prelims paper followed by a mains round that includes a studio test and interview. Seats are few, so competition is stiff. Programs include B.Des and M.Des across disciplines like product, communication, textile, apparel, animation, film and video, ceramic and glass, furniture, transportation, toy and game, photography and interaction design.

Culture: learning by doing

NID's teaching philosophy is learning by doing, and you feel it from week one. Classes become projects, projects end in juries, and juries replace most of the exams you would face at other colleges. A jury is a review where faculty, and sometimes outside designers, question your process as much as your final piece.

Craft immersion is a shared rite. First-year students spend time in craft clusters, documenting and working alongside weavers, potters, metalworkers or woodworkers. Almost every NID graduate has a story from that trip, and it bonds a batch quickly.

Workshops are open culture, not just infrastructure. Wood, metal, plastics, ceramics, textiles and AV labs are where a lot of life happens, and you learn as much from seniors at the next bench as from faculty.

Societies, events and the student council

NID does not have a DU-style society circuit. At NID, your discipline is your subculture. Product designers live in the workshops, textile students in the loom and dye labs, animation and film students in the AV suites. Each discipline has its own rhythm and its own inside jokes.

Campus life is coordinated by a Student Activity Council on each campus, which runs events, celebrations and student-led programs. NID Ahmedabad also hosts Alpavirama, a student-run international youth film festival that pulls short films and documentaries from across South Asia and beyond.

Exhibitions, open studios and diploma shows are the public face of the year. They are also where juniors meet the batch above them properly for the first time.

How NID students actually make friends

Batches are small, so you will know everyone in your year fast. Your closest friends usually come from your discipline, because you spend long nights in the same studio before every jury.

The best way to cross disciplines is collaboration. Film students need sound and art direction, product students need photographers, communication students need illustrators. Saying yes to a friend's project is the NID version of joining a club.

Ahmedabad and Bengaluru both have strong design communities outside campus. Design meetups, talks and studio visits are a good way to meet alumni and working designers while you study.

The honest part

Design school is demanding in its own way. Deadlines are constant, juries can feel personal, and the line between work and life blurs when your studio is open all night. Seniors usually advise building a routine early and keeping one thing in your week that is not a project.

The newer sister campuses are still building out permanent facilities and faculty depth, so experiences vary by campus. Talk to current students on the campus you are considering before you choose.

Careers in broad strokes

NID graduates work across UX and interaction design at tech companies, product design for consumer brands, communication and branding studios, animation and film, textiles and fashion, craft and social sector work, and their own studios. Starting pay varies widely by discipline, with UX and interaction roles generally paying most.

The alumni network is quietly powerful in Indian design. Some of India's most recognizable logos and films trace back to NID studios, and alumni often hire juniors through referrals.

Living in Ahmedabad and beyond

NID Ahmedabad's Paldi campus sits by the Sabarmati riverfront, close to the old city's markets, textile history and pol houses, all of which turn up in student projects. Gandhinagar and Bengaluru are postgraduate campuses with their own specializations, so many students move cities between degrees and build networks in two design communities.

Where Zyber fits

Design work runs on collaborators, and the right one is not always in your studio. Zyber is a social app for meeting verified people nearby, so you can find a photographer, an illustrator, a filmmaker or a sketching partner on your campus or in your city, and message them directly.
